Blue Devils Extend Win Streak to Four

Utica, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological University baseball team won a pair of non-conference games versus the IU-Kokomo Cougars, 5-4 and 10-4.

How It Happened:

Game One
  • In the first Luke Morrissette single to short, compounded with a throwing error by the shortstop plated Nick Olsen, giving LTU the early 1-0 lead.
  • Logan Barker would add to the Blue Devils' lead shortly thereafter, courtesy of a two-out fielding error by the third baseman, bringing in Morrissette.and Nathan Picchioni
  • Harry Storch would knock in Kellen Banaszewski to give Lawrence Tech a 4-0 lead in the second
  • The Cougars cut the deficit in half in the third as Patrick Mills would touch them all, scoring Riley Garcynski. LTU 4, IUK 2
  • Barker's sac fly in the third would end up being the winning run.
  • Jake Leverenz' RBI single in the fifth and Mills' second homer of the day--this one a solo shot--would not be enough for the Cougars.
  • Koby Miller earned the victory in relief, pitching one inning, allowing two runs.
  • Trent Reed closed the door in the seventh, striking out the final two batters
Inside the Numbers:
  • The Blue Devils threw six pitchers, with Dominic Puccetti getting the start, who, along with Cole Smith and Donovan Sayyae, all had scoreless outings.
  • IUK outhit LTU 8-7 while the Blue Devils left as many runners on base as the Cougars (7-7).
  • Morrissette led the Blue Devils out of the 5 spot, with 2 hits and 2 runs scored.
Game Two
  • The Cougars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, as Dylan Steele plated two with a double to the left-center field wall
  • The Blue Devils answered back with three via a Jackson Walkowiak RBI double, a Reed RBI groundout and a wild pitch to score Walkowiak
  • Kokomo battled back in the third, when Mills' double down the left field line scored Jared Heard to knot the game at three.
  • A squeeze-bunt-turned-RBI-single by Reed in the bottom half of the third gave the Blue Devils a 4-3 advantage that they would not look back from.
  • A six run fifth inning propelled the Blue Devils. Kellen Harding's RBI groundout followed by some timely IU Kokomo miscues and then a Nick Olsen blast to left center extended the Blue Devil lead to 10-3.

  • Jeremy Flattery was the winning pitcher, pitching two innings in relief.
