Auburndale, Fla. - The Lawrence Technological Blue Devils baseball team traveled to participate in the RussMatt Tournament to start off their spring break trip. They lost to Trinity Baptist College 6-3 then defeated Dordt 9-2 in the nightcap.
Game 1 vs. Trinity Baptist:
- Jay Gallant got the start for the Blue Devils, he pitched four innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on one hit, six walks, and two hit batsmen, striking out three.
- Gallant allowed one runs in the first on an RBI groundout by Ryan Heller
- The Eagles added another in the second when Cale Jones hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Dylan Owens
- Trinity Baptist tacked on a third run in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch by Gallant, plating Heller
- The Blue Devils answered back in the sixth, as Nick Venagas uncorked a wild one with the bases loaded, scoring Kellen Banaszewski
- Jake Llaneza hit a moonshot in the seventh to bring LTU within one
- Jackson Walkowiak brings in Nick Allen on an RBI groundout to third, tying the game at three apiece
- Harry Storch got the first two out in the bottom of the eighth, but then surrendered two walks, setting up Sammy Coffrin to single in what ended up being the game-winning run on a single to right, with runners advancing on a throwing error by Llaneza
- Two more Eagles scored on an error by Trent Reed, giving the Eagles a 6-3 lead into the final frame
- The Blue Devils went quietly in the ninth
- Storch was credited with the loss, pitching four innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on one hit, two walks, and a hit batter, striking out three in relief
Game 2 vs Dordt:
- Alek Wietryzkowski took the bump for the Blue Devils and threw a gem, pitching a complete game, giving up two runs (both unearned) on four hits and four walks, tallying a school-record 17 strikeouts in the process
- The scoring started in the third inning when a delayed steal of home by Nathan Brown scored the first run
- In the fourth, Llaneza scored Nick Olsen giving the Blue Devils a 2-0 lead
- Llaneza would score on a passed ball in the seventh, extending the advantage to three
- The Blue Devils would place a 6-spot on the board in the bottom of the eighth
- Olsen doubled in Storch, then scored, himself, on aa throwing error by the catcher, to grow the lead to 5-0
- Llaneza also hit an RBI double before scoring on a throwing error by the catcher, extending the led to seven
- Brown recorded his first collegiate hit and then Cameron Hardy brought him in with a triple to right field
- Nick Allen singled in John Snow, who pinch-ran for Hardy, to give the Blue Devils a 9-0 advantage, looking to close the game out
- Dordt would score two unearned runs in the ninth before being put away
- Blue Devils win 9-2, with Wietryzkowski earning the win in tremendous fashion
The Blue Devils (2-4) return to action on Monday, March 7 for a doubleheader against Ave Maria, for 11 am and 2 pm starts.
