SAGINAW, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological University baseball team fell behind 4-0 after two innings before tying the game with a four-spot in the top of the fourth. The Cardinals responded with a five-run frame in the bottom half of the inning on their way to a 11-5 win in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon.
How It Happened:
- SVSU got on the board first with an infield single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first.
- The Cardinals loaded the bases again, this time with no outs, and capitalized with a 2-RBI double and an RBI ground out to extend the advantage to 4-0.
- Nathan Picchioni helped LTU respond with a lead off double in the fourth, and was brought home two batters later on a single to center by Jackson Walkowiak.
- Jake Llaneza followed with a double before Trent Reed brought Walkowiak in to score with a single to left.
- Llaneza would touch home on a wild pitch to pull LTU within one, 4-3, after 3 ½ innings.
- Once again, the Cardinals would load the bases and made the Blue Devils pay with a grand slam to left field which doubled the SVSU lead to four runs, 8-4, before an RBI fielder's choice gave the home team a 9-4 advantage after four.
- Nick Olsen singled to begin the top of the seventh and scored on a one-out sacrifice fly by Llaneza to make it a four-run affair at 9-5.
- The Cardinals padded their lead in the bottom of the eighth with a 2-RBI single to left field on the way to an 11-5 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- It was a bullpen game for the Blue Devils as eight different pitchers got on the hill for LTU.
- Olsen was the only LTU hitter with a multi-hit day: 2-for-4, RBI, BB
- Walkowiak drove in his team-leading 32nd run of the year
