Baseball Splits Doubleheader Versus Concordia After High Scoring Game One

Utica, MI - The Lawrence Technological University baseball team played a doubleheader against Concordia University on Saturday. Game one resulted in a season high in runs for the Blue Devils as they beat the Cardinals by a final score of 25-1. Game two went into the 12th inning as CUAA came back and won by a final score of 6-4.

How It Happened: Game One - LTU 25, CUAA 1
  • In the bottom of the first inning LTU scored four runs on a Nick Olsen bomb to right field, and a Trent Reed single up the middle.
  • The scoring continued in the second inning when Jackson Walkowiak drove in Jake Llaneza after his single to center.
  • Reed hit an RBI single in the same inning to extend the lead to 6-0.
  • The Blue Devils scored six more runs in the bottom of the third on five hits, Reed homered in the inning.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, LTU scored a season high 10 runs in the inning. 
  • Sam DeKuiper riffled one over the left field fence for a three run homer to extend the lead to 21-1.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, Nathan Picchioni hit a pinch hit two run homer.
  • LTU beat CUAA by a final score of 25-1.
By The Numbers:
  • Reed went 5-for-5 with two runs and six RBI's
  • Llaneza went 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBI's
  • Nick Olsen went 2-for-4 with two runs and drove in six.
Ben Schmidt was on the bump in game one pitching a complete game giving up eight hits and only one run. Schmidt struck out six batters.

How It Happened: Game Two (F/12), LTU 4, CUAA 6
  • LTU was held scoreless through three on just three hits.
  • In the top of the fifth inning CUAA took the lead after a Batanian bomb to left center.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, LTU left the bases loaded on no runs.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jason Erhardt came to the plate with bases loaded and launched a homer over the left field fence to go up 4-1.
  • Both teams went three up three down in the seventh inning.
  • In the top of the ninth, LTU gave up three runs on a homer and RBI hit by pitch to make it 4-4.
  • LTU stranded seven runners in the next couple of innings. 
  • CUAA came up in the top of the 12th inning and Hebner hit his second homer of the game to take the lead 6-4.
  • In the bottom of the 12th the Blue Devils went three up three down.
  • LTU lost this game by a final score of 6-4.
By The Numbers:
  • Luke Morrissette went 3-for-6
  • Olsen went 2-for-5, and Reed went 2-for-3 with one run.
  • Erhardt went 1-for-4 with one run and four RBI's
Jeremy Flattery got the start in game two pitching 8.2 innings giving up nine hits on four runs. Flattery struck out seven batters. Matt Olson came in from the bullpen and threw 3.0 innings giving up three hits on two runs. Olson struck out four batters.

The next Blue Devils game is on Sunday, April 24th when they play (RV) Madonna University at Jimmy Johns Field in Utica, MI. The first pitch in game one will be thrown at 1 PM.
