Southfield, MI - The #1 Lawrence Technological University women's lacrosse team kept their season alive after beating #8 Siena Heights University 12-9 to advance to the NAIA Semifinals for the second straight year.
How It Happened: LTU 12, SHU 9
- The Saints scored two quick goals in the first minute of play.
- LTU responded with two goals of their own by Abbey Smentowski and Gabi Mitchell to tie the game.
- Siena Heights would close out the first period with back-to-back goals to go up 4-2 after one.
- Entering the second period, the Blue Devils got hot and scored four straight goals.
- In the four goal span, Alaina Smythe scored two goals, and Smentowski and Mitchell both recorded their second of the game.
- With 7:36 left in the half, the Saints tied the game up at six after a Hannah Merrick goal.
- Bella Burke gave LTU the lead back after her 41st goal of the season.
- With just under a minute before the break, Abby Barnewold sent LTU to the locker room up 8-6.
- Extending the Blue Devil lead in the third period was Burke and Smentowski making it 10-6 with 7:58 to go.
- On the final possession of the third, the Saints snuck in a goal to enter the fourth, down three goals.
- Catherine Androwski closed the gap for SHU with her free position shot.
- Midway through the fourth period, Barnewold scored her 24th of the season to give LTU a 11-8 lead.
- Siena Heights would score another goal with 6:50 left in the game.
- A huge goal with one minute left in regulation, Smentowski scored a man-up goal to seal the victory for the Blue Devils.
- LTU beat SHU in a very competitive NAIA Quarterfinals matchup by a final score of 12-9.
