DAVENPORT, Iowa – The Lawrence Technological University football team led 29-10 in the third quarter and held off a late comeback attempt by the St. Ambrose University Bees to earn their first win of the season, 36-30, on Saturday afternoon.
First Half
- LTU scored on the first possession of the game as it engineered an 11-play, 96-yard drive that was capped off by a Tyler Kulka 10-yd TD pass to Kendyl Williams at the 9:56 mark of the first quarter for a 7-0 LTU lead.
- Early in the second, SAU shanked a punt that gave LTU the ball at their own 35. After a 50-yd run by CJ Davidson, Kulka once again found Williams, this time for a 15-yd strike, as LTU doubled its advantage to 14-0 with 6:10 left in the half.
- The Bees wasted little time responding as they connected for a 59-yard TD pass on the third play of the following drive to trim the margin in half, 14-7.
- The Blue Devils marched right back down the field, with the turning point being an interception that was nullified due to a roughing the passer on the Blue Devils signal caller. Two plays later, Kulka hooked up with Nick Robinette for a 20-yard score to reestablish LTU's two touchdown differential, 21-7, going into halftime.
Second Half
- SAU opened the second half with a field goal drive but once again LTU answered, this time with Charles Tigert scoring his first collegiate TD via a 49-yard pass to make it a 29-10 Blue Devils advantage with 5:59 left in the third quarter.
- After the teams traded punts, Keone Sanders rushed it in from 10-yards out to extend the LTU cushion to 36-10 two minutes into the fourth.
- The Bees connected on a 26-yard TD pass to cut the deficit to 36-16 with 8:01 remaining in the contest.
- After LTU turned the ball over on downs at the SAU 28, the Bees scored quickly, using just 2:25 to go 72 yards and make it a 36-23 affair after a 23-yard TD strike with 3:34 left.
- On the following LTU possession, the Blue Devils fumbled on the second play of the drive giving the Bees a good drive start at their own 43.
- It took just one play to capitalize as SAU aired it out for a 57-yard score to make it a one possession game, 36-30, with 3:08 to go in the game.
- LTU recovered the following on-side kick to begin at the SAU 44. It would move the ball down to the SAU 19, but Kulka was stuffed on a 4th and 1 QB sneak to give the Bees a chance to tie the game with 1:28 left.
- SAU begin the drive with a 16-yard completion to their own 35 but it wouldn't move the ball another yard as the LTU defense forced a rush for no gain and three incompletions to hold on for the 36-30 win.
