Blue Devils Give No. 13 Cardinals all they can Handle on Homecoming

CJ Davidson surpasses 1,000 career rushing yards milestone

SOUTHFIELD--CJ Davidson became the first Lawrence Tech running back ever to eclipse 1,000 yards for a career on Saturday, but visiting No. 13-ranked Concordia (Michigan) rallied for a 24-10 Mid-States Football Association victory to spoil LTU's Homecoming at Blue Devils Stadium. The Cardinals stay unbeaten at 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in the MSFA Mideast, while the Blue Devils drop to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in the league.

How it Happened
  • Lawrence Tech took the early lead on its opening drive as Alex Osman threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jaden Rembert to cap an eight-play, 79-yard drive in just 2 minutes and 58 seconds.
  • The Cardinals took the lead for good in the second quarter, 10-7, while capitalizing on a couple of LTU misplays. An 18-yard punt that was partially blocked to the home 43 eventually led to a 40-yard field goal by Dejai Robinson with 4:45 left in the first half. On LTU's next possession and facing 4th and 5 from its 23-yard line, a high snap prevented the punt and the Blue Devils turned the ball over on downs on their 7. One play later, Gavin Brooks tossed a seven-yard strike to Logan Hay with 2:45 to go.
  • Concordia outscored LTU 14-3 in the fourth quarter to account for the final margin of victory of 14 points.
  • The Cardinals had statistical advantages in first downs (20-11), total offense (372-242), time of possession (32:40-27:20) and third-down conversions (6-for-15 to 0-for-10).
  • The teams combined for 240 yards on 23 penalties.
Lawrence Tech Highlights
  • Davidson led all rushers with 102 yards on 20 carries.
  • Jaden Rembert led LTU receivers with three catches and 38 yards.
  • Andrew Perkins III led all defenders with seven tackles among nine total, followed by Danate Banton with nine total (4 solo).
  • Sylvester Jones (4 solo, 8 tackles) and Devon Isaac each had a sack.
CUAA Highlights
  • James Carpenter rushed 14 times for 100 yards.
  • Brooks completed 12 of 26 passes for 183 yards and two TDs.
  • Marvitis Dupree (3 solo) and Liam Karry (4 solo) both led the defense with nine total tackles, with the latter getting two sacks for 13 yards.
  • Hay ended up with game highs of four receptions for 59 yards.
Beyond the Boxscore
  • Davidson now has 1,042 yards in his 30-game career.
  • LTU is now 0-3 versus the Top-25 this season, playing against No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan, No. 5 Marian (Indiana) and CUAA
  • At halftime, the 2023 LTU Athletics Hall of Fame class was introduced to the crowd: physics professor and "super fan" Scott Schneider with the Laura Affer Legacy Award; Steve Behmlander, Men's and Women's Tennis Coach, 2014-21; Tyler Winningham, Men's Soccer, 2014-16; Kadijah Kalo, Women's Lacrosse, 2014-17; and Hali Butler, Women's Basketball, 2012-16.
  • CUAA leads the all-time series 4-0, including a 3-0 mark in Southfield.
  • The Blue Devils held the Cardinals' vaunted offense to 17 points below their 41.5 points per game average and almost 100 yards below what they average in total yards.
Lawrence Tech travels to Fort Wayne, Ind., next Saturday for a MSFA road matchup with Saint Francis (Indiana).
