ACHAMD1 Men's Hockey Earns Comeback Win over Aquinas in WHAC Action

Box Score FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich.--Freshman David Hoftiezer scored the go-ahead goal to break a 4-4 tie in the third period as Lawrence Tech overcame a pair of two-goal deficits to defeat visiting Aquinas, 6-4, in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference men's hockey contest at Farmington Hills Ice Arena on Friday. The Blue Devils up their record to 5-6 on the season and 5-4 in the WHAC, while the Saints dip to 4-10 overall and 2-5 in the conference.

How it Happened
  • Aquinas led 2-0 after the first period and 4-2 after 40 minutes. Ben Cesario got the Saints on the scoreboard with 15 minutes and 24 seconds left in the first and Mitchell Hoon followed suit 32 seconds later.
  • Sophomore Drake Barnish one-timed a shot from below the right face-off circle on a feed from sophomore Joey Mattevi to cut the deficit in half at the 10:21 mark of the second period.
  • After the Saints padded their lead to 3-1, graduate student Brenden Preiss scored short-handed after intercepting a hard-around pass behind the LTU goal and skating the other way on a breakaway.
  • Forty seconds after Preiss' goal, Dylan Rumpke made it 4-2 in favor of Aquinas with 62 seconds left in the second.
  • Lawrence Tech erupted for four goals in the third stanza, including a power-play, empty-net goal from Barnish to seal the come-from-behind victory.
  • The Blue Devils held a 32-25 advantage in shots on goal.

  • Preiss led all skaters with three points on two goals and an assist.
  • Barnish finished with two goals.
  • Sophomore goalie Brett Tome made 21 saves for the victory, including 11 stops in a scoreless third period to hold off the Saints.
  • Graduate students Thimo Ey (1g, 1a) and Sean Pilet (2a) joined Barnish and Preiss with a multiple-point night.

  • Christian Look tallied two assists.
  • Xavier Erickson and Hoon both finished with a goal and an assist.
  • Max Johnston made 26 saves.
