Beavers' First Triple-Double in LTU Modern History Powers Conference Victory at Concordia

The senior recorded 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the Blue Devils won, 85-78

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--Senior Brandon Beavers stuffed the stats sheet with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the first triple-double in the modern era of the Lawrence Tech men's basketball program, leading the Blue Devils to an 85-78 victory Saturday at Concordia (Michigan) in the CUAA Cardinals Fieldhouse.

Lawrence Tech improves to 6-5 on the season while the host Cardinals see their three-game winning streak snapped to fall to 5-4 overall. Both teams are 3-3 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference.

Lawrence Tech Highlights Concordia (Mich.) Highlights
  • Zavion McClendon (8 rebounds) led all scorers with 23 points and he had eight rebounds.
  • Joey Garwood added 21 points, followed by Nate Brighton's double-double of 14 points and game-high 15 rebounds and Devyn Jones had 10 points.
  • Mason Canfield led the squad with five assists.
How it Happened
  • Beavers, who scored 12 points and eight assists in the second half, fed Lund for a kickout three-pointer above the key that gave LTU a 61-53 lead with 9 minutes and 41 seconds left in the game. The Blue Devils never relinquished the lead after that.
  • The Cardinals outrebounded the Blue Devils 43-27, but made on 66.7 percent of their free throw attempts (16-24) and committed 15 turnovers that translated to 15 LTU points.
  • Lawrence Tech had the greater depth by outscoring the Concordia bench, 26-10.
  • The contest featured six ties and seven lead changes, with LTU holding a 35-31 lead.
  • Concordia's biggest lead of two points came on the opening basket. The Cardinals led for the last time at the 12:05 mark of the second half when McClendon's trey made it 50-49.
  • The Blue Devils responded with a 12-3 run over the next 2:24 span that culminated with Lund's 3ball on Beavers' pass.
Beyond the Boxscore
  • Lawrence Tech avenges a 72-70 loss to Concordia (Mich.) at home back on Nov. 11 to begin WHAC play, and evens the all-time series with three wins apiece.
  • The Blue Devils avoided their first three-game losing streak tonight by splitting the regular-season series with the Cardinals.
  • It is believed that at least one other triple-double performance occurred in LTU men's basketball history during the 1950s or 1960s.
  • The modern era of LTU Men's Basketball started with the 2012-13 season after the University reinstated varsity athletics in 2011.
  • The Blue Devils had just two turnovers--a season low. They commit only 9.9 per game, which ranks second-best in the WHAC.
  • Beavers leads the conference with 28 steals and 7.9 rebounds per game.
Up Next
  • The Blue Devils will travel to Grand Rapids next Saturday (3 p.m.) for another WHAC contest against Aquinas College.
