SOUTHFIELD- The Lawrence Tech Women's Lacrosse team battled back from a two-goal lead by the Bees of SCAD late in the fourth quarter to send the NAIA Women's Lacrosse National Championship game into Overtime at Blue Devils Stadium on Saturday evening. The result was an electrifying goal by Alaina Smyth from senior Gabi Mitchell, with the clock almost expiring in the first OVERTIME to cap off a 14-game winning streak for the Blue Devils. This marks the first National Championship in program history for the Blue Devils and the second for the Lawrence Tech Athletic Department this spring, with Men's Bowling taking home the Big Red Banner in March.
SCAD would strike early with three quick goals to set an eerie tone within Blue Devils Stadium, calling for the Blue Devils to call for a timeout. The Blue Devils finally answered with a coast-to-coast goal by Bella Burke to get the Blue Devils on the board in the first quarter. A stifling defense by the Blue Devils during the remainder of the first quarter kept the lead within reach. The second quarter was a tale of two stories, with the Blue Devils getting the spark they needed and rattling off seven goals before SCAD could answer. The Blue Devils would knock in eight goals in the second quarter to give them the lead heading into halftime.
A back-and-forth third quarter would set the tone for a nerve-racking fourth quarter for both coaches, teams, and fans that saw a total of four points scored, including two big goals by Hannah Huebner. Huebner's goals late in the fourth quarter were the game-changers for the Blue Devils, who needed someone to facilitate for them with Robinson on the bench late with an injury. Gabi Mitchell would get the last two assists for the Blue Devils, with both coming up monumental for the program.
Overtime opened up with a back-and-fourth battle for ground balls before a shot save with about 1:58 left in the period, which Anabelle Acluche came up big with the stop, and a yellow card to SCAD changed the game. Jaisanna Jarvis got the eventual clear getting it to Gabi Mitchell before Mitchell found Alaina Smythe at the right time, and a quick shot over the top of the goalie ended the game.
A celebration will occur sometime in the fall once the student body has returned to Southfield for classes.
