SOUTHFIELD--The Lawrence Technological University Esports program will host the 2023 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Rocket League Championships on Saturday, Nov. 11, on the LTU campus. A start time will be determined later.
This will be the third year that the WHAC has conducted Esports as a championship sport. Lawrence Tech has hosted Smash Brothers tournaments and Yellow Flag has entertained high school events powered by LTU, but this will be the first collegiate athletic conference event taking place on the LTU campus.
WHAC teams will compete all season long to determine seeding. The championship event is a double-elimination bracket. The nine conference teams currently competing in the fall Rocket League include Aquinas, Cleary, Concordia-Ann Arbor, Cornerstone, Indiana Tech, Lourdes, the host Blue Devils, Siena Heights and Rochester. The championship will be held in rooms A200 and A210 of the
College of Architecture and Design Building (#4 on the map). Room A200 will be the main stage and A210 will have two other pods of computers. Both locations will provide the opportunity for spectators to watch.
"We are excited to be hosting the WHAC Rocket League Championships, which is also an honor for our University and Esports program to showcase our campus and facilities," stated LTU head coach Danielle Sirekis. "This event will highlight the collaboration of work across multiple departments on campus. We will also be able to provide our students with the experience of helping run and host events.
"As a program, we have tried to embody our motto of Theory and Practice--events like this give experience in event management, broadcasting and production. We have a diverse group of majors as this opportunity will give the students something unique to put on their resume that will show they have an integrative background of experience," she added.
LTU Esports student-athletes will relish the opportunity to compete in front of their peers and family in a championship environment.
"They love the experience a LAN event gives and it's such an honor for us to get to compete on our home turf," Sirekis said. "We are thrilled to be chosen as this year's host for WHAC and we hope to have good attendance."
Lawrence Tech has been
predicted to finish in fourth place in a close WHAC Rocket League race, according to the coaches' preseason poll released last month.
