GAME PREVIEW: Football Closes Month of September at No. 5-Ranked Marian (Ind.)

The Blue Devils will be facing their second top-5 NAIA opponent in 2023

SOUTHFIELD--Lawrence Tech hits the road for the second week in a row on Saturday when the Blue Devils travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to take on host and fifth-ranked Marian University in a Mid-States Football Association Mideast League contest. Kickoff at St. Vincent Field is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.

At the Helm: Detroit native Avante Mitchell is 11-16 in his fourth season as the Blue Devils head coach. He first came to LTU in 2019 as the team's defensive coordinator. He also has collegiate coaching experience at Concordia-Ann Arbor, Taylor and NCAA Division II Northwood.

Last Time Out: Olivet Nazarene jumped out to a 20-0 halftime lead and eventually moved ahead 34-0 en route to a 34-14 non-conference victory over visiting LTU in a MSFA crossover affair....D'Vaun Bentley put LTU on the scoreboard with 14 minutes and 14 seconds left in the fourth quarter when he raced 70 yards on the second play of the drive for the touchdown...then 2:18 later, CJ Davidson found the end zone from 2 yards out...ONU had the edge in total yards (394-273), time of possession (34:57-25:03) and first downs (23-17)...the Tigers scored 13 points off five Blue Devils turnovers.

All-Time Series: Lawrence Tech is seeking its first win over Marian in three previous meetings...LTU is 0-2 on the road against the Knights, who won their last matchup 45-15 a year ago...leading the way for LTU, Tyler Kulka completed 21 of 35 pass attempts for 304 yards and two TDs to Kendyl Williams (26 yards) and Jalen Wallace (9 yards)...CJ Thompson led the team with six receptions and 103 yards.

CJ Davidson Tops LTU Record Book: The redshirt senior out of Pontiac (Walled Lake Central High School) became the Blue Devils career rushing king in the season opener, surpassing previous recordholder Tanner Foley's 642 yards rushing from 2018-19. Davidson, who owns three 100-yard games in his career, is a 2022 All-MSFA Mideast Second Team pick, and currently has 886 yards to extend his benchmark.

Charting Rembert: Fellow All-MSFA choice Jaden Rembert, a junior, ranks third on the program's all-time list with 1,343 receiving yards (No. 1: Kendyl Williams, 2,015; 2018-22) and third with 91 catches (No. 1: CJ Thompson, 155, 2018-19 and '21-22).

Company on the Receiving Corp: The Blue Devils have another top receiver in Jalen Wallacewho tops the team in receptions (21), yards (291), average/catch (13.86 yards; minimum 6) and average per game (72.5 yards). In his 20-game career, the junior has 80 receptions, 964 yards and five TDs.

Punt This!: Sophomore punter Carter Dixon is the reigning MSFA Special Teams Player of the Week, the first such honor of his career and the first LTU player since opening week in 2021. Against St. Francis (Illinois) on Sept. 16, he unleashed the MSFA's longest punt of 2023 at 70 yards--1 shy of the school record. On the season, Dixon is sixth with a 38.1 average.

Balance on Defense: Lawrence Tech boasts six student-athletes with at least 20 total tackles, including redshirt senior secondary Andrew Perkins III (16+17=33), redshirt junior linebacker Matt Plaga (13+20=33), redshirt sophomore linebacker Brody Snyder (5+17=22), junior lineman Michael White (4+18=22), and junior linebacker Darian Murray (8+13=21) and junior defensive back Thomas Lewis (7+14=21).

Did You Know?: In the MSFA Mideast preseason poll, LTU is picked to finish seventh (18 points) while Marian is the favorite to win the league (47 points, 5 first-place votes)..the Knights are fifth in this week's NAIA national rankings with 352 points; Northwestern (Iowa) is No. 1 (18 first-place votes) with 418...the Blue Devils are 0-2 versus the Top-25 this season, with then-No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan now fourth...Wallace ranks third in the MSFA in catches and fifth in receiving yards...Davidson is seventh in the Association with 67.0 rushing yards per game...the LTU passing offense is fourth in the MSFA with 816 yards and the offense is also third in fourth-down conversions (4-for-11)...the Blue Devils are second defensively with four fumble recoveries...MU's MSFA statistical rankings include first in kick return average (34.4 ypa) and time of possession (39:47), second in scoring offense (37.7 ppg), total offense (444.0 ypg), passing yards (259.7 ypg) and third in rushing touchdowns (7) ...Marian reached the 2022 NAIA Football Championship Series quarterfinals, returning 10 All-MSFA honorees, including First-Team selections Drew Byerly at tight end, Nate Frey in the secondary, and a pair of offensive linemen in Zach Sibila and Austin Jones...the Blue Devils have an 11-7 record during the month of September.
