FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Lawrence Tech University was back in action Saturday as they traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to take on the Cougars of the University of Saint Francis. The Blue Devils were coming off a bye week after winning their first game of the season the weekend before against Judson University, 77-18. Looking to add another win to their 1-3 record, they needed to pick up where they left off two weeks ago.
The Cougars entered the matchup with a 3-2 overall record and are known for their high-powered offense, which averages more than 43 points per game. They also average more than 470 yards of total offense per game, while the Blue Devils average just over 28 points and 406 yards of total offense per game. LTU's defense would be put to the test early and often throughout the game. If the Blue Devils hoped to end on a good note, they would have to control the ball on offense and keep the Cougars high-powered offense off the field as long as possible.
The Blue Devils would open up the scoring in this one with
D'Vaun Bentley continuing his impressive season on a 9 yard TD run. Saint Francis would respond just a minute later with a 55 yard pass to tie the game at 7. Saint Francis would continue piling on until the second quarter. With the Blue Devils down 21-7,
Brendan Sersaw caught a 70 yard touchdown pass on the first play of the drive to make it a one score game. After that score, the Blue Devils were unable to get anything going for the rest of the game and dropping this one 77-14.
The Blue Devils put up 242 yards of total offense compared to Saint Francis's 575. The Blue Devils also only converted on 29% of their third downs. Leading the way in the passing game for the Blue Devils was Freshman
Ryan Schuster, who completed 13 passes on 16 attempts for 139 yards as well as a touchdown and an interception. The backfield saw sophomore
D'Vaun Bentley taking 18 carries for 68 yards and a touchdown. The stout Saint Francis defense was tough for the Blue Devils to get through in both the passing and the rushing game. Leading the way through the air was led by senior
Brendan Sersaw, who caught 2 receptions for 87 yards and a 70 yard touchdown. Turnovers by the Blue Devils is what led to so many scores for Saint Francis. The Blue Devils lost 4 fumbles and also threw an interception.
The defense was led by senior linebacker
Sylvester Jones, who had 13 total tackles as well as 0.5 sacks. Sophomore
Bobby Clendenon was able to force a fumble today on a sack. Freshman
Lorenzo Moceri was also able to get past the offensive line and earn himself 1.5 sacks. Junior kicker
Vincent Robison was 2/2 on extra points and had no field goal attempts.
The Blue Devils will be back in action next Saturday when they host the Saints of Siena Heights University at Blue Devils Stadium. LTU will look to win their first matchup against Siena Heights since football was reinstated at Lawrence Tech University in 2018. Kickoff is set for 1 PM on Saturday, October 19th.
