Blue Devils use big innings late to secure victories

DETROIT, MICH. -- The Lawrence Technological University baseball team hosted the Cleary Cougars at The Corner Ballpark in Detroit. The Blue Devils continued their 

Game 1:
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cleary got on the board first in the second inning when Kempainen singled in Jamieson, with Wesley scoring on the play from a throwing error 
  • A Blue Devils' throwing error in the third doubled the Cougar lead, up to four
  • LTU scoring their first run in the fifth inning when Trent Reed's sac fly plated Trent Matthews
  • Following a Joel Stirnemann stolen base, Jake Llaneza tripled to right, scoring Stirnemann to cut the deficit in half
  • Llaneza ties the game with a deep drive to right, scoring himself and Stirnemann
  • Singles by Erhardt and Meier put runners on the corners with two outs in the seventh
  • Nick Post hit a ground ball to third, slid head-first into first, and the first baseman bobbled the throw from third, plating the winning run in walk-off fashion 
NOTES
  • Jake Llaneza started the game, he went 5.0 innings, allowing 4 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits and 5 walks, striking out 5.
  • Jeremy Flattery pitched 2 shutout innings to earn the win
Game 2:
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The scoring opened in the bottom of the second when an error by the right fielder helped Jason Erhardt to score
  • Two batters later, Tasker Tripi's sac fly (and subsequent error by the right fielder, allowing him to reach) scored Zach Meier
  • Tripi stole third and home during Logan Walker's at-bat to give LTU a 3-0 lead
  • Cleary scored 5 in the third to take a 5-3 lead
  • Following an error in the fourth, a single to left scored another for Cleary, extending the advantage to 3
  • A bunt single by Tripi loaded the bases in the 4th, followed by an RBI ground out by Walker and a sac fy by Stirnemann to cut the Cougar lead to just one
  • In the sixth, Post scores on a muffed throw by the Cleary catcher, tying the game at six
  • The Blue Devils opened the game in the eighth, putting a six-spot on the board
    • Tripi reaching on a sac bunt-error combo scored Post, giving the Blue Devils the lead
    • Two batters later, Matthews scored Tripi
    • Erhardt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded
    • Meier cleared the bases with a triple in the alley
  • Matt Olson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close the game
NOTES
  • Kenny Wright got the start, he went 3.1 innings, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 9 hits and 1 walks, striking out 4.
  • Kent Madak, Cole Smith, Ryan Hulke and Matt Olson pitched 5.1 IP of scoreless ball. They combined to allow 1 hit and 3 walks, and struck out 9.
  • Olson got the last two innings (0 baserunners, 5 strikeouts) to sweep the Cougars, and earning himself a win.
