Gustavo Machado's 19 Kills Powers #RV Men's Volleyball Past SMWC Pomeroys, 3-1

The Blue Devils' offense outhit the visitors .311 to .117

SOUTHFIELD--Lawrence Tech spotted St. Mary-of-the-Woods College a 1-0 lead before storming back for a 23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-18 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference men's volleyball victory at the Don Ridler Field House on Friday night. These same two teams will conclude their two-match weekend series here at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Freshman Gustavo Machado posted a career-high 19 kills on a .342 attack percentage, followed closely by redshirt junior Brendon Down who had totals of 18 and .308. Down and Machado completed the double-double with a match-high 14 and 13 digs apiece. Sophomore Nathaniel Brownlee directed a LTU offense that outhit SMWC .311 to .248 with a match-best 56 assists. Sophomore Akram Askoul chipped in 13 kills and hit .455.

Marko Zolnjan (.276) and Bentley Meyer (.226) led the Pomeroys with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Ethan Martins added 34 assists, three kills and three total blocks.

In the opening set, LTU rallied from a 24-17 deficit to close within 24-23 on the strength of five-straight service points by sophomore Zach Mead. Askoul had two terminations during the 6-0 scoring run, but a kill by Zolnjan gave the visitors a brief one-set advantage.

The Blue Devils evened the match 1-1 after dominating the second set with a .405 hitting percentage and holding SMWC to .148.

Lawrence Tech led wire-to-wire in the third set, taking a 2-1 lead as both teams fared well offensively above .300.

In the decisive fourth set, the home team jumped out to leads of 7-0, 16-8 and 21-13 en route to the victory.

Graduate student Matheus Andrade added 13 digs for LTU as the Blue Devils defense kept several balls in play with 60 digs compared to 40 for SMWC.
