SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — The Women's Volleyball team was back in action Friday night as they traveled to Adrian, Michigan, to participate in the Siena Heights Tournament over the Labor Day weekend. The Blue Devils played three games in two days as they tried to get back on track after opening the season 1-2 in last weekend's tournament play in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The Blue Devils' first match of the weekend came against WHAC opponent Spring Arbor University on Friday night. This was the second time this season that LTU and Spring Arbor matched up, as the two schools had opened the season against each other in the Onset Volleyball Invitational Tournament just a week ago. The Blue Devils won the opening match against the Cougars of Spring Arbor to kick off the 2024 season with a dominant performance, defeating the Cougars 3-1 in match play.
The Cougars came into the second meeting with the Blue Devils at 3-1 on the season, their only loss being to the Blue Devils in the first match up of the season. Spring Arbor, riding a three-game win streak and with a chip on their shoulder from the previous loss to LTU, started the match off hot and got the scoring going early on in the first set. The Blue Devils also came to play on the offensive side, but defensively, they did not get the job done in the first set and lost 24-26 to start the match.
Lawrence Tech followed up the first set loss with a second set loss, scoring 17-25. Going into the third set down 0-2, the Blue Devils hoped to bounce back in a must-win third set to continue play into the fourth set. LTU, going into the third set 0-2, took the third set with a score of 25-15 and continued into the fourth set.
The Blue Devils fell to the Cougars in the fourth and final set with a score of 16-25, rounding out the first game of the weekend. The Blue Devils were led by senior Lindsay Hubler, who accounted for 12 points, along with sophomore Maria Trevino, who finished with 11 points. Senior Abby Zambeck was also big for the Blue Devils, recording 21 assists.
Lawrence Tech will be back in action early Saturday morning as they take on the Pilots of Bethel University (IN) at 10 a.m. in their second match of the Siena Heights Volleyball Tournament, followed by the third and final match of the weekend against the Trolls of Trinity Christian University (Ill.) at 2 p.m.
