SOUTFIELD, Mich. – The Blue Devils Men's Tennis team kicked off the 2024 season on Saturday by participating in the Hillsdale College Invitational in Hillsdale, MI. Lawrence Tech had six individuals competing in the tournament over the weekend, with one making it to the finals.
Evan Morgan led the way for the Blue Devils in singles competition, winning his first-round match against an opponent from Walsh University with scores of 6-3, 6-0. Morgan advanced to the second round, where he faced a competitor from the University of Findlay. He won that match 6-4, 5-1, with the match ending early due to an injury to his opponent. Morgan reached the final match but fell just short of a singles victory, losing to Luis Hernandez of Walsh University in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles play, the Blue Devils had three teams competing, with two advancing past the first round. In Flight A,
Emilio Gonzalez and
Carlos Patricio Merlo won their first match against competitors from the host school, Hillsdale College, and advanced to the semi-finals. They were defeated by the University of Findlay 6-1 in the semi-finals.
The other pair that saw early success was Rafael Mendes and Takuyo King, who were victorious in their first match of the day, beating opponents from the University of Findlay 6-3. In the second round, they fell short of reaching the finals after a 6-2 loss to Walsh University.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Marion, Indiana, to compete in the ITA Regional Tournament.
