Football Secures Their First Win of the Season in Dominating Fashion

SOUTHFIELD,Mich. – The Blue Devils were back in action Saturday afternoon as they would host the Eagles of Judson University for a homecoming matchup at Blue Devils Stadium. Lawrence Tech, coming off a tough last-minute loss to the #5 ranked team in the country at the time, would look to keep its offensive success rolling in hopes of securing their first win of the season, while coach Scott Merchant looks to secure his first win as the Blue Devils newest head coach.

The 0-3 Blue Devils would look to lean on redshirt sophomore running back D'Vaun Bentley, who is coming off the game of a lifetime as he rushed for 319 yards and a pair of touchdowns in last weeks matchup. That performance propelled Bentley to the top of the record books as he would hold the record for MSFA single game rushing yards as well as Lawrence Tech's single game rushing record. However, it would be a team effort if the Blue Devils were going to beat the Eagles of Judson University who were 1-2 entering todays matchup.

The Blue Devils had an offensive explosion today, scoring 11 total touchdowns on offense. The Blue Devils totaled 569 yards of total offense which allowed for their 11 touchdowns. Most of the offense came from the ground game today, rushing for 313 yards as a team. Leading the way on the ground was sophomore D'Vaun Bentley, finishing the game with 96 yards and 2 touchdowns on 16 carries. Junior Keone Sanders had an impressive day of his own, rushing for 90 yards and 3 touchdowns on 10 carries. Grad student Jon Brunette was able to tack on some yards of his own, rushing for 74 yards on 12 carries along with a touchdown. Jacob Ranney also had a notable game, rushing for 38 yards on 5 carries and adding a touchdown onto his stat sheet.

The Blue Devils also found chunk yards through the air today, passing for 256 total yards in the game. Freshman Ryan Schuster was the only Blue Devil to throw a pass today, tallying 256 yards and 4 touchdowns on 14 completions (19 attempts). Graduate student Brendan Sersaw led the way in receiving, taking 4 completions for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns. Sophomore Tyler Garrett finished the day with 5 receptions and 89 yards. Senior Jaden Rembert found the end zone today near the end of the first half on a 23 yard pass. He finished the day with 3 receptions for 47 yards and that touchdown at the end of the first half. Senior Brycetyn Hedden also found himself in the end zone off of a reception at the beginning of the second quarter for 10 yards.

Leading the way on the defensive side of the ball was Grad student Ronnell Lackey, who finished the game with 10 total tackles (6 assisted, 4 unassisted).  The stout Blue Devils defense were able to hold Judson to 18 points on the day. The Blue Devils were also able to force 4 interceptions today with their lockdown defense. Senior Sylvester Jones, senior MacKenzie Elebra, junior Ze'Veon McDonald, and freshman Artisan Kyles all were able to pick off the Judson QB in the matchup.

Lawrence Tech's football team will be back in action after a bye week on October 12th, as they travel to Fort Wayne, Indiana to take on the Cougars of the University of Saint Francis (Ind.). Kickoff is set for 1pm as the Blue Devils look begin a winning streak.
