PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. — In game one Lawrence Tech battled back to erase an early three-run deficit, but Trinity Christian used steady production in the middle innings to hand the Blue Devils a 4-7 loss in a seven-inning matchup in chilly conditions.
After Lawrence Tech tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fourth, Trinity Christian answered immediately and never trailed again. The Trolls scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings and added two more in the fifth to create the final margin.
Trinity Christian seized control early with a three-run first inning, capped by Pilgrim's two-run single to center. The Blue Devils responded in the second when outfielder
Luke Weinberger, one of Lawrence Tech's top offensive performers on the day, lined a single to right. A misplay in the outfield allowed two runs to come in, cutting the deficit to 3-2 and giving Weinberger a 2-RBI swing on the play.
Lawrence Tech completed the comeback in the fourth. Lee reached ahead of infielder Logan, who beat out an infield single to second base that brought Lee home and tied the game at 3-3. However, the momentum was short-lived. In the bottom half, Trinity Christian answered with an RBI single to left, quickly restoring a 4-3 lead for the hosts.
The Blue Devils continued to apply pressure offensively, finishing with eight hits and drawing five walks while leaving 10 runners on base. In the top of the sixth, Lawrence Tech again threatened when Martinkow punched an RBI single to left to make it 6-4. Weinberger led the Blue Devils' attack, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base, while Lawrence Tech also swiped two bags as a team and saw three different players drive in runs.
Trinity Christian's pitching and timely hitting ultimately made the difference. The Trolls' limited Lawrence Tech to a single run in four of the seven innings and stranded 10 Blue Devils on base.
On the mound, Lawrence Tech pitchers struck out seven but were forced to navigate constant traffic, issuing seven walks as Trinity Christian matched the Blue Devils with 10 runners left on base. Despite the setback, the Blue Devils showed resilience in cold, windy conditions, erasing an early hole and continuing to generate opportunities at the plate.
In game two a late three-run surge by Trinity Christian College erased a two-run lead and sent the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils men's baseball team to a 2–4 defeat in a seven-inning contest.
Lawrence Tech carried a 2–0 advantage into the bottom of the fifth after capitalizing on a key swing from McIntyre, but Trinity Christian answered with four unanswered runs over its final two at-bats. The hosts used a run in the fifth and a three-run sixth, highlighted by a two-run double and an unearned insurance run, to take control and hold on.
The Blue Devils broke through in the top of the fourth. After putting traffic on the bases, McIntyre delivered the game's first big hit, singling to left and driving in two runs to give Lawrence Tech a 2–0 lead. McIntyre finished with two hits, including a double, and all two of the team's RBI, providing the bulk of the offensive damage in a lineup that totaled eight hits.
On the mound, Wright gave Lawrence Tech a strong start. The right-hander worked 4.0 scoreless innings, scattering four hits while allowing no runs with one walk and one strikeout. Wright's outing kept Trinity Christian off the board through four innings and allowed the Blue Devils to play from in front in cold, light-snow conditions in Palos Heights.
Trinity Christian began its comeback in the bottom of the fifth with a single to right to cut the Blue Devils' lead to 2–1. An inning later, the Trolls' came through with the decisive swing, doubling to left-center to plate two runs and put Trinity Christian ahead 3–2. They extended their lead through an error allowing another run to score and extending the margin to 4–2. Of the four runs Lawrence Tech allowed, only two were earned.
Offensively, the Blue Devils showed the ability to create pressure but struggled to capitalize fully. Lawrence Tech finished with eight hits and drew two walks, while also being hit by two pitches and stealing four bases. Weinberger matched McIntyre, collecting two hits and swiping two bases. However, the Blue Devils left eight runners on base and saw several promising innings end without additional damage.
Trinity Christian earned the win with 5.0 innings of work, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts, closing out the final inning as Lawrence Tech was held scoreless over its last three frames.Despite the setback, the performance of Wright on the mound and the production from McIntyre and Weinberger at the plate offered positives for the Blue Devils.
In game three Lawrence Tech used an early jolt from the top of the order and a steady pitching effort to edge Trinity Christian (Ill.) 3-2 in a seven-inning contest Saturday afternoon.
The decisive run came in the fifth inning, when
Luke Weinberger's speed set up a go-ahead sacrifice fly from Baird. Weinberger reached and came around to score an unearned run, and Baird lifted a sac fly to left to break a 2-2 tie and give the Blue Devils a 3-2 advantage. From there, Lawrence Tech's pitching staff closed the door, stranding runners and protecting the one-run lead through the final innings.
Lawrence Tech seized control early with a two-run first inning. Weinberger tripled to left-center to open the scoring threat, and Martinkow followed by reaching on an error by the second baseman, allowing Weinberger to score. Moments later, McIntyre grounded out to third, bringing Martinkow home for a 2-0 lead. Both runs in the frame were unearned, capitalizing on Trinity Christian's defensive miscues.
Trinity Christian answered with single runs in the second and third to pull even. They doubled to right-center to put the tying run in scoring position, and delivered again with a run-scoring single to knot the game at 2-2.
The Blue Devils' offense finished with five hits but made them count, aided by patience at the plate that produced four walks and extended innings. Rogers provided a steady presence, with a .750 on-base percentage, a stolen base and consistently setting the table in the middle of the lineup. Weinberger scored twice, tripled and added a sacrifice, factoring directly into the team's first and final runs.
On the mound, Lawrence Tech limited Trinity Christian to two earned runs on eight hits and struck out seven over seven innings. The staff collectively worked around nine Trolls left on base, getting timely outs to escape pressure situations and preserve the narrow advantage.
Lawrence Tech, played error-free defense and leveraged Trinity Christian's mistakes into all three runs, closing the first day of the road series with a win the road series with a win, a one-run victory in cold, blustery conditions.
They are set to compete against Trinity Christian College (Ill.) again Feb. 28 to conclude the series.
