DAVENPORT, Fla. - Lawrence Tech used back-to-back three-run frames and a dominant relief outing from Kenny Wright to pull away from Northwestern College (Iowa) for a 6-2 win in Davenport, Fla.
Scoreless through five innings, the Blue Devils broke the game open with three runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth to build a 6-0 cushion. Northwestern scratched across two runs with two outs in the ninth, but Lawrence Tech's bullpen work earlier in the afternoon kept the Red Raiders from mounting a serious comeback.
The breakthrough came in the bottom of the sixth. Gavin Martinkowski reached ahead of Justin Baird, who delivered a run-scoring single to plate the game's first run. Later in the inning, D'Andrea Parnell reached on a fielder's choice, and an error allowed Evan McIntyre to score an unearned run. Brady Osterhouse then was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in another run and capping the three-run frame that gave Lawrence Tech a 3-0 lead.
Lawrence Tech added key insurance in the eighth. Parnell opened the inning with a triple to the gap to immediately put pressure on Northwestern's pitching staff. The Blue Devils capitalized as Luke Weinberger followed later with an RBI single, and Martinkowski added another run-scoring hit to extend the advantage to 6-0. Lawrence Tech finished with eight hits and took advantage of three Northwestern errors while leaving 10 runners on base.
On the mound, Wright stabilized the middle and late innings and earned the win in relief. The right-hander worked 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs with seven strikeouts and three walks. His work out of the bullpen helped strand traffic for Northwestern, which drew six walks and left 10 runners on base but managed only four hits against the Blue Devils' staff.
Northwestern's only damage came in the ninth after two were out. Pinch-hitter singled to keep the game alive, followed with an RBI double to get the Red Raiders on the board. A balk brought in a second run, but a final out ended the rally and sealed the 6-2 result in favor of Lawrence Tech.
Martinkowski, Weinberger and Baird led the Blue Devils' offense. Martinkowski finished with two hits, one run scored, one RBI, a walk, a hit-by-pitch and two stolen bases, impacting the game in multiple ways. Weinberger added two hits, an RBI and a stolen base from the outfield, while Baird chipped in two hits and an RBI. Lawrence Tech played a clean game defensively with no errors, complementing its late-inning offense and Wright's effective relief work to close out the win.
