SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Lawrence Tech erased deficits and traded goals throughout Wednesday afternoon, but Marian (Ind.) finished the final possession that mattered, slipping past the Blue Devils 13-12 in overtime at Blue Devils Stadium.
The Blue Devils had several strong offensive stretches in a game that stayed tight from the opening draw. Bella Louwerse opened the scoring in the first quarter, and Mari Pellmann added a late goal with seconds left to give Lawrence Tech a 3-2 lead after one. Marian answered in the second quarter, moving in front 4-3 on Ruby Mason's player-up goal, then stretching the margin to 6-4 when Giedd scored her second goal of the quarter before halftime.
Lawrence Tech responded with one of its best runs after the break. Alyson Walendzak converted a free-position chance in the third quarter to pull the Blue Devils even at 6-6, and Louwerse later scored to put the team back in front, 8-7. The Blue Devils carried that push into the fourth, where McKenna VanZant scored just two seconds into the quarter to make it 9-8. Lawrence Tech finished with 12 goals on 26 shots, recorded seven assists, and held a slight edge in draw controls, 14-13, while also collecting 20 ground balls.
Louwerse led Lawrence Tech with four goals and one assist. Walendzak added three goals and two assists, and Morgan Waligora delivered a balanced play making effort with two goals and three assists. In the cage, the Blue Devils goalkeeper made eight saves.
The difference came in the closing moments. After Lawrence Tech built its way to a 12-11 lead late in the fourth quarter, Marian earned a free-position chance and converted with 16 seconds to play, tying the game at 12-12. In overtime, the Blue Devils were unable to answer after the free-position goal put Marian ahead for good, ending a back-and-forth contest that featured four ties and multiple lead changes.
The Blue Devils look ahead to their match this Saturday, Mar. 28 on the road against Bethel University (Ind.).
