SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Lawrence Tech turned a tight first quarter into a runaway Saturday, using an eight-goal second quarter to defeat Bethel (IN) 18-6 at Morey Field in Mishawaka, Indiana. After the teams finished the opening quarter tied 2-2, the Blue Devils seized control with a sustained surge in the second and carried a 10-3 lead into halftime.
The decisive stretch began early in the second quarter when Alyson Walendzak scored at 13:12 to put Lawrence Tech back in front. She added a free-position goal at 11:52, and the Blue Devils kept building from there. Jocelyn Vander Zwaag scored a man-up goal at 8:18, and Walendzak struck again with 21 seconds left in the half on another power-play chance, capping the run and giving Lawrence Tech a seven-goal cushion at the break.
Walendzak led the Blue Devils with six goals on 12 shots, including three free-position goals, while Mari Pellmann finished with five goals on five shots. Vander Zwaag added three goals, and Morgan Waligora supplied two goals and one assist. Waligora also opened the scoring at 10:50 of the first quarter, and Lawrence Tech got another early goal from Vander Zwaag before Bethel answered to pull even.
Lawrence Tech continued to separate after halftime. McKenna VanZant scored a free-position goal at 10:56 of the third quarter, and Pellmann followed eight seconds later to make it 12-4. Walendzak added another goal late in the third, assisted by Waligora, as the Blue Devils outscored Bethel 5-2 in the quarter. Waligora scored again early in the fourth, and Pellmann closed Lawrence Tech's scoring with goals at 4:44 and 3:57.
The Blue Devils controlled possession throughout, finishing with an 18-6 edge in draw controls. Lawrence Tech also posted a 41-10 advantage in shots and put 37 attempts on goal. Bethel goalkeeper Maddie Reel kept the margin from growing even larger with 19 saves. Lawrence Tech recorded two saves as a team while limiting Bethel to eight shots on goal.
Bethel was led by Megan Williams with two goals and one assist, while Kyra Dominick added two first-quarter goals. Lawrence Tech improved behind a balanced attack, efficient draw work, and timely finishing on special-team chances, scoring two power-play goals in front of an announced attendance of 70.
