SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — The Lawrence Technological University (LTU) men's and women's tennis teams returned to the courts at the Franklin Athletic Club on Saturday, hosting Tiffin University for a weekend doubleheader. Despite several tightly contested matches and three-set battles, the Blue Devils were defeated on both sides, with the men falling 1-6 and the women dropping a 0-7 decision.
The results move the LTU women's overall record to 7-8, while the men's team falls to 3-10 on the season.
Men's Recap: Patte Shines in 1-6 Defeat
The Blue Devils men's squad put up a fierce fight against the Dragons, taking three separate singles flights to decisive third sets.
The highlight of the day for LTU came from
Augustin Patte at the No. 2 singles spot. Patte delivered a brilliant performance, cruising through his first set before showing exceptional poise in a tight second-set tiebreaker to defeat Tiffin's N. Ritz, 6-1, 7-6 (4), earning the Blue Devils their point for the dual.
Elsewhere in singles play, LTU was on the brink of several other victories but narrowly missed out in third-set heartbreakers.
Carlos Patricio (No. 1) captured his opening set 6-4 before falling in three, while
Takuya King (No. 3) blanked his opponent 6-0 in the first set before the momentum shifted. At No. 5 singles,
Alessandro Gatto also claimed his opening set 7-5 and battled all the way to a third-set super tiebreaker, ultimately falling 7-10.
In doubles action, the Blue Devils competed closely but were unable to secure the opening point. The No. 1 pairing of Patricio and King was narrowly edged out 5-7, while the No. 2 and No. 3 flights both saw competitive 4-6 finishes in favor of the visitors.
Women's Recap: LTU Swept by Strong Dragons Squad
In the women's matchup, Tiffin proved to be a formidable opponent, taking the dual 7-0.
The Blue Devils showed strong resistance in doubles play, particularly at the No. 3 spot. The LTU duo of
Claudia Calabuig and
Taylor Moore pushed their opponents to the absolute limit, forcing a tiebreaker before falling 6-7 (1). At No. 2 doubles,
Isabella Aray and Paola Herrera also played a highly competitive set, dropping a narrow 4-6 decision.
In singles, Tiffin's lineup controlled the tempo to complete the sweep. Jackie Alcocer put up a solid fight at No. 2 singles, pushing the second set before falling 1-6, 4-6.
Miriam McCormick also battled hard at the No. 5 spot, dropping a 2-6, 3-6 decision.
