Lawrence Tech men edge Calvin 5-4 on Senior Day; women fall 4-3

| By:
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Lawrence Tech split its Senior Day tennis matches against Calvin College on Friday in Southfield, as the Blue Devils men pulled out a 5-4 victory and the women dropped a narrow 4-3 decision.

The men got key results across both doubles and singles to secure the team win. Takuya King and Carlos Patrico delivered an important doubles point with a 7-6 victory, setting the tone for Lawrence Tech. In singles play, King added another win in straight sets, while Akessardro Gatto and Juan Jose Escriba also won in two sets. Tyler Brunsell supplied the clinching swing with a three-set singles victory as the Blue Devils finished just ahead of Calvin in the nine-match contest.

On the women's side, Lawrence Tech came up one point short despite a strong showing in singles. Calvin swept the three doubles flights, beginning with a 6-3 win over Paola Herrera and Isabella Aray. Jacqueline Alcocer and Miriam McCormick were beaten 6-4, and Taylor Moore and Claudia Calabuig fell 6-1, leaving the Blue Devils in an early hole.

Lawrence Tech responded in singles, where Claudia Calabuig, Isabella Aray and Paola Herrera each earned straight-set victories to keep the match close. Those three wins accounted for all of the Blue Devils' team points, but Calvin did enough in the remaining singles flights to hold on for the 4-3 result.

Friday's matches carried added significance as Senior Day for both the Lawrence Tech men's and women's programs. The afternoon featured several of the Blue Devils' strongest individual efforts, particularly from King on the men's side and from Calabuig, Aray and Herrera in the women's lineup.

Lawrence Tech closed the day with the men's side celebrating a one-point team win and the women nearly erasing an early deficit after doubles play against Calvin at the Blue Devils' home courts on Northwestern Highway.
