SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Indiana Tech took control early and never let Lawrence Tech recover Wednesday night, building a multi-goal first-quarter lead and riding a decisive possession advantage to a 20-8 win in Southfield. The visitors outscored the Blue Devils 5-2 in the first quarter, 4-1 in the second and 7-2 in the third before closing out the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference matchup at 7 p.m.
The decisive theme was possession. Indiana Tech won 25 of 32 faceoffs and finished with 84 shots, including 52 on goal, compared with 26 shots and 21 on cage for Lawrence Tech. That edge showed up almost immediately. Ryan Tedesco scored the opener at 14:18 of the first quarter, Jake Deacon pushed the lead to 2-1 at 11:41, and Tedesco struck again at 6:01 as Indiana Tech moved in front 4-1. By halftime, Lawrence Tech trailed 9-3.
Indiana Tech put the game out of reach in the third quarter. Tedesco scored at 12:13 for a 10-3 margin, Deacon followed at 10:43 off an assist from Cam Fewster, and the visitors kept pouring on pressure in transition and on extended possessions. Torben Aagaard scored at 1:16 off a feed from Reice Hafl to make it 14-5, and Collin Howard added a goal with 30 seconds left in the quarter, again with Hafl assisting, as Indiana Tech carried a 16-5 lead into the fourth.
Lawrence Tech found some late offense, particularly on extra-man opportunities. Wyatt Salenbien scored at 9:40 of the fourth quarter on an assist from Brendan Shinavier, then Shinavier converted two man-up goals, one at 5:15 and another at 3:20, both assisted by Brennan Urbas, to trim the deficit to 17-8. Shinavier's late burst gave the Blue Devils one of their clearest bright spots, with multiple fourth-quarter goals coming on special teams.
Still, Indiana Tech answered each push. Deacon scored a short-handed goal at 2:43 of the fourth, Cam Fewster added a power-play goal at 2:04, and Ryan Morgan closed the scoring at 1:04 off an assist from Fewster. Tedesco led Indiana Tech with five goals, while Deacon added four. Aagaard and Howard each scored three times, and Fewster finished with two goals and two assists.
For Lawrence Tech, the shot volume against was reflected in the save totals. The Blue Devils were credited with 32 goalkeeper saves, but Indiana Tech's sustained pressure and faceoff success proved too much to overcome. Lawrence Tech finished with seven faceoff wins, 22 turnovers and two power-play goals, both from Shinavier in the fourth quarter.Â
