FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Morgan Waligora scored with 42 seconds remaining, and Lawrence Tech held off Indiana Tech for an 11-10 victory Wednesday in a conference match. The Blue Devils built an early cushion, watched Indiana Tech erase it in the final minutes, then answered with one last possession to secure the one-goal road win.
Waligora delivered the decisive moment after Indiana Tech tied the match at 10-10 on Michelle Farrell's second fourth-quarter goal. The senior attacker finished with six goals and one assist on eight shots, putting her imprint on the game from the opening quarter through the final sequence. She had already sparked Lawrence Tech's early surge with a three-goal stretch in the first quarter, helping the Blue Devils turn a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead.
Lawrence Tech extended the margin to 6-2 early in the second quarter when Alyson Walendzak scored and Waligora added a free-position goal. Indiana Tech answered before halftime on goals from Lilliana Rivera and Brook Maul to make it 6-4, then continued its push in the third quarter. Kylie King scored on a man-up chance, and Lauren Hainlin tied the match. Walendzak responded with her third goal in the third to restore an 8-7 Lawrence Tech lead.
The Blue Devils again created separation in the fourth. Bella Louwerse scored to make it 9-7, and Waligora converted on a man-up opportunity for a 10-7 advantage. Indiana Tech still had an answer. Hainlin scored a man-up goal, Farrell struck, and then Farrell tied it before Waligora's winner ended the comeback bid.
Walendzak added three goals and five ground balls for Lawrence Tech, while Louwerse finished with two goals. Jocelyn Vander Zwaag was credited with an assist on one of Waligora's first-quarter goals. Lawrence Tech finished with 11 goals on 33 shots, including 24 on goal, and controlled the ground-ball battle 27-11. The Blue Devils also produced one power-play goal and 11 draw controls. In goal, Bella Faz played all 60 minutes and made six saves.
Indiana Tech kept pressure on throughout. Goalkeeper Kat Hoff gave the hosts a chance to complete the rally with 13 saves as Lawrence Tech repeatedly tested the cage. Indiana Tech held a slight 12-11 edge in draw controls, but its 22 turnovers limited chances to fully capitalize.
They are set to compete against Marian University (Ind.) away in Indianapolis, Ind. April 18.
