Blue Devils Drop Season Opener at Detroit Mercy 5-0

DETROIT, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's soccer team opened the season with a 5-0 loss at NCAA Division I University of Detroit Mercy on Wednesday, August 23 in Detroit, Mich.

Lawrence Tech (0-1) had an early chance in the game on their only corner kick of the game, but the opportunity came up empty. The Titans Rachel DeLuca was able to break the scoreless tie as she shot a ball across the box into the upper corner to give Detroit Mercy a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Two minutes later, the Titans Rachel Russo got her foot on a loose ball in front of the net to give Detroit Mercy a 2-0 lead.

The Blue Devils struggled to gain momentum as Coach Richards made a few subs throughout the half to find a spark. However, the Titans Caitlin Carroll's header pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 36th minute off a pass from DeLuca.

Newcomer Claudia Krygier started the second half in net, giving up two goals in her first action for LTU. Katelyn Mather had a chance in the 53rd minute to get on the board, but the Titans keeper was able to make the save. Four minutes later, Phylisha Drayton took a DeLuca pass and snuck it inside the far post to give Detroit Mercy a 4-0 lead in the 57th minute. Kelli Doyle headed in the Titans fifth goal off a Olivia Parra corner kick.

Lawrence Tech was limited to just two shots on goal compared to 15 from Detroit Mercy. The Titans also held a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks. Krygier made eight saves in net while Rebecca Almandoz made one save in 45 minutes of action.

Lawrence Tech is back on the field Saturday, August 26 at 5 p.m. when they host Ohio Christian University at LTU Athletic Field.
