SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's tennis team fell 5-4 to NCAA Division II Tiffin (Ohio) University on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
Lawrence Tech (2-1) opened the match with a 2-1 lead following the doubles flights. Jan Horstkoetter (SR/Cologne, Germany) and Stijn Bremer (SO/Arnhem, Gelderland, Netherland) beat Tom Arias and Sorin Navrotchi 8-3 at No. 3 doubles to give Lawrence Tech a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils Javier Alvarez (SR/Santiago de Compostela, Spain) and Robert Saitov (SO/Ufa, Bashkortostan Republic Ru) lost 8-4 at No. 1 singles to give Tiffin a point to tie the match at 1-1. Vincent Colarossi (SR/Dearborn Heights, Mich.) and Mason Wenzel (SR/Howell, Mich.) broke the tie with an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Tiffin took the first point with a straight sets win at No. 1 singles over Alvarez to tie the match at 2-2. The Dragons took the lead 3-2 with a 6-5, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles over Saitov. Mason Wenzel answered back with a 6-3, 4-6, 13-11 win at No. 5 singles to tie it at 3-3. Matthew Wenzel (FR/Howell, Mich.), winning his first collegiate match 6-3, 1-6, 10-5, gave Lawrence Tech the 4-3 lead with two matches remaining.
At No. 2 singles, Bremer battled Elio Lezama Perez in a three-set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 14-12 ultimately giving Tiffin a point to re-tie the match at 4-4. Horstkoetter was the last match on court, with an epic dual at No. 4 singles. Horstkoetter took the first set in a tie-breaker, 7-6 (10-8) before Navrotchi won the next set 7-6 (7-4) to force a third set, 10-point tie-breaker. Navrotchi won the tie-breaker 10-4 to seal the win for Tiffin.
Lawrence Tech is back on the court Saturday, Sept. 9 when they host Lake Superior State in Dearborn, Mich. at the Dearborn High School tennis courts (Dearborn, MI (19501 W. Outer Dr. 48124).
