No. 2 Lawrence Tech Falls at No. 7 Cumberlands in Season Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The 2nd-ranked Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's lacrosse team suffered a 15-10 loss at No. 7-ranked University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) on Friday night in WIlliamsburg, Ky.

Lawrence Tech (0-1) fell behind early as Cumberlands took a 1-0 lead 1:22 into the game. The Blue Devils answered with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead with 22:14 left in the first half. Isabelle Vickers (SR/Rockford, MI) and Kaylee Patterson (JR/Flint, Mich.) scored for Lawrence Tech. It was Patterson's first career goal with Lawrence Tech.

Cumberlands (2-0) responded with four of the next six goals to take a 5-4 lead with 11:55 remaining in the first half. Patterson added her second of the night and Marci Schaeffer (SR/Eaton Rapids, Mich.) added her first of the season as LTU made it a one goal game. Lawrence Tech tied the match as Taegan Laier notched her first collegiate goal for the Blue Devils.

The Patriots closed the first half with four straight goals to take a 9-5 lead into halftime. The Blue Devils opened the second half with three straight goals to cut the lead to 9-8. Ashley Collins (SR/Hartland, MI) scored her first of the season while Anna Gagnon (SO/Grand Haven, Mich.) and Ashley Sherry (FR/Savage, Minn.) add the other two. Sherry's goal was her first collegiate goal.

Cumberlands answered the 3-0 run with a 5-0 run to take a 14-8 lead with 18:30 left in the game. Vickers made it 14-9, but Cumberlands added a late goal to take a 15-9 lead with 2:01 remaining in the game. Gagnon scored a late goal for LTU to end the game 15-10.

Marie Klonowski (SR/Gurnee, IL) started the game in net making 10 saves and giving up 15 goals on 25 shots on goal. Patterson, Vickers, and Gagnon scored two goals each while Collins, Schaeffer, and Sherry scored a goal each. Gagnon also added two assists while Vickers and Collins added an assist each.

Lawrence Tech is back on the field Sunday, February 18 at No. 4-ranked Georgetown (Ky.) University. Opening draw set for 12 p.m.
