GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The 2nd-ranked Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's lacrosse team defeated Calvin (Mich.) College 14-8 on Wednesday night in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Lawrence Tech (8-2, 1-0) needed a comeback to beat the Knights as they trailed 6-4 with 22:32 left in the game. The Blue Devils responded with five straight goals, four of them in just over a minute and a half of gametime, to regain the lead at 9-6. Isabelle Vickers (SR/Rockford, MI) scored three straight goals to give Lawrence Tech the 7-6 lead with 19:08 left in the game, Ashley Collins (SR/Hartland, MI) scored an unassisted goal to make it 8-6 followed by Gabbi Larkin to push the lead to 9-6.
Calvin (2-5) cut it to 8-7, but that's as close as the Knights got as the Blue Devils added five goals down the stretch to make it 14-8. Collins scored a pair while Teagan Laier (FR/Howell, Mich.) added one over that mini three goal run. Calvin got one back at 5:18, but goals from both Laier and Larkin sealed the 14-8 win.
The Blue Devils trailed Calvin 2-0 early in the first half as the Knights scored two goals in the opening three minutes. The Blue Devils answered with a pair of goals as Isabelle Vickers (Collins assist) made it a 2-1 game followed by Marci Schaeffer (SR/Eaton Rapids, Mich.) (Larkin) at 19:31 of the first half tie the game at 2-2.
Calvin (2-4) retook the lead at 4-2 with 7:28 remaining in the half. Lawrence Tech made it a one goal game as Vickers (Gagnon) scored her second of the game in the waning moments of the half.
Reigning NAIA defensive player of the week led the way with five goals, one assist, and six draw controls while Collins finished with six assists and three goals. Laier recorded three goals on three shots followed by Larkin with two goals, four draw controls and an assist. Schaeffer finished with one goal and four caused turnovers.
Marie Klonowski (SR/Gurnee, IL) started in goal, making 12 saves on 20 shots while Calvin's goalie Ellis Chalfant allowed 11 goals on 14 shots. Knights back-up goalie Meghan Economou gave up three goals on four shots.
Lawrence Tech is back on the field April 4 when they travel to [RV] Aquinas (Mich.) College in Grand Rapids, Mich. for a 4 p.m. start.
