Box Score SOUTHFIELD, Mich.- Women's lacrosse took to the field of Blue Devils Stadium for the first time in 3 years in what has been a long-awaited return for the program. This is mainly due to construction and a season last year cut short due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. The result was a bounce-back win over Madonna 17-4 on Saturday.
It was the Ashley Sherry day Saturday afternoon as she accounted for 5 goals and 5 assists. Sherry would score first for the Blue Devils, with her first goal coming at 22:49 in the first half. Abbey Smentowski, who had a hat trick on the afternoon, grabbed her first goal at 22:20 in the first half. Sherry scored her 2nd goal of the afternoon at the 21:49 mark; Smentowski returned with her 2nd goal as well, coming at 20:22 all in the first half. Sherry would knot the hat trick in the first half, with her third goal coming at 15:19. A new scorer for the Blue Devils, Jaisanna Jarvis, would snipe one in off the Sherry assist at the 14:33 mark. Smentowski grabbed her hat trick off the assist from Jarvis at the 9:08 mark. The Blue Devils ended the first half with two hat tricks and an onslaught of scoring and up 7-2.
The second half got underway, with the Blue Devils picking up where they left off; this time, Kady Waits found the back of the net off a Sherry assist, scoring at the 27:03 mark of the second half. Waits would follow up that with an unassisted goal coming at 23:20. Bella Van Buren got on the board finally with an assist coming from Sherry at 22:08. Katelyn Waligoa sniped one in alone at the 20:47 mark. Sherry was back with a goal of her own coming at 20:08; meanwhile, Van Buren found the back of the net again, this time at the 18:48 mark. Kaylee Patterson got on the board with a goal at 17:22. Sherry wasn't entirely done, just yet grabbing another goal at the 10:44 mark. Teagan Lair hopped on the scoring train off a Sherry assist at the 9:38 mark, then Abby Barnewold grabbed the last ticket to the scoring train, scoring at 9:07 from a Sherry assist.
Overall the Blue Devils defensively had 3 saves on 7 shots while scooping 38 groundballs and 15 draw controls. They turned the ball over 9 times, on 36 shots, and were 5-9 in free positions.
Looking ahead, the Blue Devils will head to Mishawaka, Indiana, to take on the Bethel (Ind.) Pilots in an 11:30 am first draw.
