#4 WLAX Takes Down #2 Cumberlands University in Overtime

Detroit, Mich - The #4 Lawrence Technological University women's lacrosse team opened up their season at home against #2 Cumberlands University. LTU would find themselves down in this game but found momentum late in the fourth quarter when they came up big when it mattered most. After the game was tied after regulation, the Blue Devils would score first to upset the Patriots by a final score of 10-9. 

Cumberlands would take the lead early in the first quarter after a Bella Ricchiazzi goal.

LTU would score their first goal of the season with 10:48 left in the first after Abbey Smentowski found the back of the net.

Two minutes later, Smentowski put one past the goalie again to tie things up at two.

The Patriots would score three unanswered goals in the next period and a half to go up 5-2 with seven minutes left in the half.

A goal by Alaina Smythe assisted by Sydney Robinson ended their run to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Cumberlands would score right before the half to enter the locker room up 6-3. 

The first goal of the second half came in the third at 7:30 when Hannah Huebner made it 6-4.

Late in the third quarter, LTU would capitalize on a couple more goals from Smythe and Smentowski to knot the game up 6-6.

The Patriots regained the lead less than a minute in to go up by one.

With 9:21 left in regulation, Rachel Leigh made it 8-6.

Minutes later, Smentowski would score her fourth goal of the game to bring LTU back within one.

The Blue Devils found themselves a man down with less than five minutes, but Smythe juked her defender out on the attack to tie the game up again.

Leigh for Cumberlands and Bella Burke scored for LTU to send the game to overtime tied at nine apiece.

In overtime, Gabi Mitchell caught the ball and got through the defense to put the ball in the back of the net to help her team upset #2 Cumberlands by a final score of 10-9.

The team recorded 13 shots on goal with a total of 22 shots. LTU earned six assists and caused a total of 17 turnovers. Goalie Annabelle Acluche saw 19 shots and saved 10 in this game.

The next Blue Devils game is on March 8th when they travel to West Palm Beach, Florida to play against #1 Keiser University. This game will begin at 1 PM.
