MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.--Less than 24 hours after skating to a 2-2 overtime tie with Central Michigan at home, the Lawrence Tech ACHA Division 3 men's hockey team erupted for a season high in goals on Saturday with a 9-2 victory over the host Chippewas in Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference East Division action at Martin Arena. The visiting Blue Devils improve to 3-2-1 on the season while CMU is now 3-4-1; both teams are 1-0-1 in the MCHC East.
Benjamin De Haas and
Gavin Holmes paced the LTU offense with two goals apiece.
Will Jentz also had two points with a goal and an assist, and
Nicklas Oda contributed two assists.
This morning's early 10:30 a.m. opening face-off certainly was to LTU's liking as the Blue Devils raced to a 5-0 lead after the first period.
Sawyer Walker started the scoring just 67 seconds after puckdrop on an assist from Oda, and Holmes made it 2-0 just 42 seconds later with a feed from Jentz.
Connor Juhasz was credited with the game-winning goal as his tally made it 3-0 with 15 minutes and 8 seconds left in the first period.
Griffin Foster picked up the win between the LTU pipes, stopping 16 of 18 shots he faced. A day after perplexing Blue Devils shooters by making 45 saves last night, CMU starting goalie Sam Zavelson was chased out early today after giving up four goals on six shots in the first 10 minutes.
Trailing 8-0 in the final stanza, CMU spoiled Foster's shutout bid as Sam Camara scored with 6:02 remaining on assists from Connor Beemish and Josh Gillgren. Jake Bishop had the Chippewas' other goal at the 5:36 mark.
Lawrence Tech outshot CMU 33 to 18. The Blue Devils are 5-0-2 in their last seven meetings against the Chipps.
It was a physical affair as the teams had a combined 44 minutes in penalties, plus CMU had a skater assessed a game disqualification.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 15, when they host Florida Gulf Coast University at Farmington Hills Ice Arena, starting at 2:30 p.m.
