Blue Devils Sweep Aquinas in WHAC Men's Hockey Weekend Series, 6-2 and 3-2 (ot)

Sean Pilet nets overtime winner on Saturday to give LTU five points on the weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich.--Graduate student Sean Pilet scored 34 seconds into overtime with Lawrence Tech on the power-play, lifting the host Blue Devils to a 3-2 win over Aquinas at Farmington Hills Ice Arena on Saturday evening. Lawrence Tech also beat the Saints the previous night, 6-2, at Southside Ice Arena in Byron Center, as the Blue Devils earned five out of a possible six points in the teams' Wolverine–Hoosier Athletic Conference men's hockey weekend series.

Lawrence Tech improves to 17-10 on the season and 15-7 in the WHAC, while Aquinas now stands at 15-15 overall and 10-8-1 in the conference.

Lawrence Tech Highlights
  • Pilet finished the weekend with four points on a goal and three assists.
  • Sophomore Drake Barnish potted two goals in two wins.
  • Sophomore Brett Tome stopped 53 of 57 shots he faced in a pair of victories.
  • Graduate student Thimo Ey chipped in three assists overall.
  • Freshman defenseman Charlie Ward recorded five assists in the four-goal road victory, plus another helper tonight.
  • Sophomore Maximus Nguyen contributed three goals among four points.
  • Freshman blueliner Johan Palmqvist had a goal and two assists in Friday's outing.
Aquinas Highlights.
  • Christian Look led the AQ offense with three points on a goal and two assists in the two games.
  • Alex Johnson had a goal and an assist.
  • Michael Allman kept the Saints in Saturday's game by making 52 saves.
How it Happened--Saturday's Game
  • With 1 minute and 24 seconds left in the first period, Barnish gave LTU a 1-0 lead on the power play when he scored off Ey's tip shot from between the face-off dots.
  • Aquinas tied it with a shorthanded goal by Dylan Rumpke at the 10:47 mark of the second period.
  • Nguyen put LTU back in the lead at 14:02 of the third period when he wristed a power-play goal over the goalie's shoulder.
  • But Aquinas forced the extra period about 6 minutes later as Johnson scored on the power-play to tie it 2-all.
  • Lawrence Tech started the 3-on-3 OT session on the power-play, with Ey entering the zone and then skating around the net before passing off to Pilet who ripped a shot from just below the right face-off circle top-shelf over Allman's glove.
  • The Blue Devils outshot the Saints, 55-25. 
How it Happened--Friday's Game (Boxscore)
  • Lawrence Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the first 20:12 and never looked back. Barnish and Palmqvist scored power play goals in the first period to set the tone.
  • Aquinas scored both of its goals on the power play by Christian Look at 12:25 of the second and Dylan Rumpke with just 3 seconds left in the game.
  • The Blue Devils went 2-for-5 on the power-play and killed off six of eight man-advantage situations for the Saints.
  • Tome made 30 saves to get the win.
  • Lawrence Tech outshot Aquinas 44 to 32.
Beyond the Boxscore
  • Lawrence Tech is 10-8 in the all-time series (5-4 at home), including a seven-game winning streak against the Saints.
  • In the latest WHAC standings, No. 18-ranked Indiana Tech leads with 46 points, followed by No. 25 Michigan-Dearborn with 45 and LTU, 44.
  • Tome is now 14-8-1 on the season with a 2.52 goals-against average.
  • Barnish paces LTU in goals (22), power-play tallies (10) and total points (32).
  • Ey is the Blue Devils' top playmaker with 22 assists--a personal record for the regular-season--among 30 points.
