Second-Ranked ACHAMD3 Men's Hockey Freezes Ice Cats, 8-1

DETROIT--Junior Gavin Holmes and sophomore Luke Radu each scored two goals to power nationally-ranked Lawrence Tech to a convincing 8-1 non-conference victory over Pittsburgh-Johnstown in an American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 3 men's hockey game on Saturday evening at the annual Clark Park Blue Devils Winter Classic. The Blue Devils are now 21-3-1 on the season, while the Ice Cats slip to 12-8-3. 

Lawrence Tech Highlights
  • Holmes added an assist to give him a game-high three points.
  • Freshman Will Jentz and sophomore Devin Genzel had two assists apiece.
  • Junior Timothy Young played the first 30 minutes to get credit for the win after making five saves.
  • Sophomore Tommy Le did not allow a goal over the final 30, also recording five saves.
  • Freshman George French also had a two-point night with a goal and an assist.
Pittsburgh-Johnstown Highlights
  • Eon Lamoliano scored the Ice Cats' lone goal.
  • Goalie Matt Page recorded 58 saves.
How it Happened
  • Lawrence Tech got all the offense it would need with two goals in the first period. Holmes tied the game 1-1 with 13 minutes and 5 seconds left, followed by Radu at 4:54.
  • Lamoliano actually gave the visitors a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal at the 14:50 mark.
  • Lawrence Tech outshot Pittsburgh-Johnstown 66 to 11.
  • The Blue Devils iced the win with three goals in both the second and third periods.

  • Lawrence Tech moved up a spot to No. 2 in the sixth ACHAMD3 national rankings, released late Friday afternoon.

  • Sophomore Benjamin De Haas and senior Connor Juhasz are tied for the team lead in both goals (16) and total points (29).

  • Lawrence Tech will wrap up the regular-season by jumping back into Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference action against Saginaw Valley State University on Friday, Feb. 9 (5 p.m.), at home in Farmington Hills Ice Arena, and then going to the Cardinals' Saginaw Bay Arena the following night for a 9:30 puckdrop.
