MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo.--Top-seeded Lawrence Tech scored two goals 1 minute and 18 seconds apart early in the third period, and junior goaltender
Timothy Young made 32 stops, as the Blue Devils hung on to edge No. 4 Missouri, 3-2, in the second semifinal game of the 2024 American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 3 Tournament in USA Arena at the Centene Community Ice Center on Monday afternoon. BOXSCORE

The Blue Devils (28-5-2 overall) will square off against No. 3 Grand Valley State in a Michigan winner-take-all national championship game at 5 p.m. Tuesday (4 p.m. Central Time). The Lakers got a late third period goal to beat Calvin, 3-2, in today's other semifinals contest.

With the score 1-1 in the decisive third period, junior defenseman Nick Schoen banged home the go-ahead goal from top of the left circle on a broken play at the 4:17 mark. Then just 78 seconds later, freshman Will Jentz snapped a low shot to the left corner from in front of the net on a pass below the goal line by senior Connor Juhasz at 5:35.

Missouri (22-5) cut the deficit to 3-2 on a goal by Mason Budde, his second of the contest, at 7:44.

The Blue Devils faced a 6-on-4 penalty-kill situation for the final 1:18 after Jentz was whistled for a minor penalty and the Tigers pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker. But the one-goal advantage held up because of a couple blocked shots by senior Nicklas Oda and timely stops from Young (9-1-1) who ended up with 32 saves.

Lawrence Tech struck first at 4:50 of the opening period when junior Gavin Holmes buried a rebound at the left post after an original shot by Jentz from the slot. Sophomore Benjamin De Haas had a golden opportunity to extend LTU's lead to 2-0 about 8 minutes later when he got free in the slot but Tanner Richardson (37 saves) gloved it.

Budde instead tied it 1-1 midway through the second period. The Tigers continued to put pressure on the Blue Devils, but Young stymied Ethan DeGroat with a right leg pad save on a breakaway with 7:59 left and a Missouri shot clanged off the crossbar with 37 seconds remaining.

Young continued to shine in the third period, preserving the one-goal lead and giving LTU a chance to reach the ACHAMD3 title game for the first time in program history. At 6:30 to go, he snagged a glove save at the left dot. Then after the ensuing offensive zone face-off for the Tigers, he stopped two successive shots from point-blank range. With 1:40 left, he denied DeGroat with the glove on a Grade-A chance from close in.
