NAIA Women's Lacrosse Championship Preview

SOUTHFIELD, MICH.--The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference tournament champion, and defending National Association of Intercollegiate Athetics champion Lawrence Tech Blue Devils will play No. 6 Benedictine (Kan.) at the 2024 NAIA Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament that will be held Wednesday, May 1 through Saturday, May 4, at Memorial Stadium in Savannah, Ga.

RECORDS: No. 3 LTU (14-1) versus Benedictine (Kan.) (13-3)

SCHEDULE: The Blue Devils wil face Benedictine on Wednesday at 3 pm Eastern time. The winner will face the winner of No. 2 Cumberlands (Ky.) and No. 7 Keiser (Fla.) on Thursday at 6 pm Eastern time.

AT FIRST GLANCE: Lawrence Tech enters the match on a 10-game win streak, winning 25 of their last 26 dating back to last season and  48 of ther last 51 dating back to the beginning of the 2022 season. The Blue Devils cruised through their conference tournament, winning each match-up by 7 apiece (15-8; 16-9)

ALL-TIME SERIES: Lawrence Tech is 0-2 against Benedictine, including a heartbreaking 2022 loss (9-8) in the national championship game on LTU's home turf. Benedictine was also a 6-seed in that tournament. This will be the teams' first match-up away from Blue Devils Stadium.

CHAMPIONS COLLIDE: The match-up of Lawrence Tech and Benedictine will be the 
second consecutive time the two previous champions faced off in the first round (2023, Benedictine v Keiser).

WHAC DOMINANCE: LTU won their fourth consecutive WHAC Title, making them a mainstay in the NAIA tournament since it became a championship sport (2021).

COACH EMMA KUEHL: Coach Kuehl took over the lacrosse program this year after 2 years as a lead assistant, following a 66-7 record as Detroit Country Day women's lacrosse head coach. She was named WHAC Coach of the Year in her first season at the helm of the LTU program.

HONORS GALORE: Lawrence Tech received a ton of accolades this season, from players of the week to "of the year" awards

- ALL WHAC - Junior attack Sydney Robinson (Grand Haven, Mich.) runs it back as WHAC Offensive Player of the Year. Grad defensive midfielder Jaisanna Jarvis (Medina, Ohio) was named WHAC Defensive Player of the Year. Junior attacking midfielder Alaina Smythe (Novi, Mich.) wins Midfielder of the Year. The trio are joined by junior attack Hannah Huebner (Caledonia, Mich.), senior defender Jenna Wright (Saline, Mich.), and senior goalkeeper Anabelle Acluche (West Bloomfield, Mich.) on the first team all-conference. Sophomore defensive midfielder Jocelyn Vander Zwaag (West Olive, Mich.) was named to the second team.
- NAIA Player of the Week: Acluche was named NAIA Defensive Player of the Week on March 12. Robinson was named NAIA Offensive Player of the Week on April 9.
- WHAC Player of the Week: Robinson was a three-time WHAC Offensive Player of the week, winning in consecutive weeks (Apr 1, 8, 15). Acluche was named WHAC Defensive Player of the Week on Mar. 11
- IWLCA Player of the Week: Robinson (Offense; Apr 2, 23) and Vander Zwaag (Defense; Apr 16, 23) were each named the IWLCA NAIA Players of the Week this season

ROBBIE'S ROCKIN: Sydney Robinson led the NAIA in scoring leading into the tournament with 122 points--an LTU single-season record. Her 63 assists also paces the NAIA, as well as the LTU singe-season mark. Robinson became the first LTU lacrosse player, men or women, to eclipse the 50-goal, 50-assist mark on Apr 13.

POINT PARALYSIS: The Blue Devils held 12 of 15 opponents to single digits, including a three-game stretch from Apr 3-10 allowing a total of 2 goals (2 shutouts). Anabelle Acluche leads the NAIA in save % (58.3%) by almost 5-percent to second place.

LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils faced Indiana Tech (another team in the 8 team tournament field) in the WHAC Championship. Indiana Tech led 3-1 midway through the first before LTU rattled off the next 11 goals, spanning a quarter and a half, putting the game away. Huebner (5 goals) and Robinson (7 assists, 10 total points) led the offense, while Vander Zwaag put together a statsheet-stuffer (3 goals, 3 ground balls, 2 caused TOs)

LAST TIME OUT--AGAINST BENEDICTINE: Huebner, Robinson and Smythe all scored in the game, but were not as big of a part of the offense then as they are now. Acluche was in net, recording 5 saves in the loss.
