SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Lawrence Tech's football team was back in action Saturday afternoon as they played host to the Knights of Marian University who entered the matchup ranked #5 in the country. The Blue Devils would be coming off back to back losses to top #25 teams in the country and would be facing their toughest test yet in the Knights. Coming off a 46-7 loss to the #24 team in the country St. Francis (Ill) the Blue Devils would hope to rebound after recording less than 200 total yards of total offense and giving up more than 400 yards to the Saints of Saint Francis University (Ill) just a week ago. However, this would not be an easy feat as this would be the best team the Blue Devils would play to date and potentially all season.
Lawrence Tech would start the game on offense, where the first drive was a 2 play touchdown drive led by a big run by D'Vaun Bentley with Jaden Rembert capping it off with a 6 yard touchdown pass from Ryan Schuster. Marian would respond with a touchdown of their own in the second quarter, making the game tied at 7. With the first half expiring, Vincent Robison nailed a 21 yard kick to make it 10-7 going into the half. Marian would score in the 3rd quarter, making the game 14-10. With time winding down in the 3rd quarter, D'Vaun Bentley took the ball to the house on a monster 29 yard rush to take the lead over Marian 17-14. Marian would tie the game at 17 early in the 4th quarter with a 39 yard field goal. D'Vaun Bentley would find the end zone again to keep his incredible day going on a 17 yard rush with 3 minutes remaining in the game. The extra point after was missed, resulting in a LTU lead of 23-17. Marian was able to cap off their final drive with a touchdown and an extra point kick to take the lead with 45 seconds remaining. LTU was unable to get down the field in that time, resulting in a heartbreaking loss for the Blue Devils.
Redshirt Junior D'Vaun Bentley was unstoppable all day, finishing the game with 325 yards and 2 touchdowns off of just 17 carries. Redshirt freshman Ryan Schuster finished the game with 280 yards passing with a touchdown pass to go along with it. Graduate student Brendan Sersaw led the way in receiving with 143 yards off of 7 catches. Leading the way on the defensive side of the ball was graduate student Ronnell Lackey, who finished the game with 13 total tackles (5 solo, 8 assisted). Redshirt junior Brody Snyder was also all over the field, finishing the game with 12 total tackles (5 solo, 7 unassisted). The Blue Devils finished the game with a whopping 640 yards of total offense, but were unable to secure the win.
The Blue Devils, still searching for their first win of the season, will look to bounce back next Saturday when they take on the Eagles of Judson University at home in Southfield, MI. Next weeks matchup will be a big one as it will be Homecoming for Lawrence Technological University and you can anticipate a large crowd of current students and past alumni coming back to cheer on their beloved Blue Devils. The Homecoming game will kick off at 1pm at Blue Devils Stadium.
