Box Score BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. - Lawrence Tech dropped its season opener 13-2 to Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday morning at Detroit Country Day in Beverly Hills, Mich., as a fourth-quarter surge from the visitors put the game out of reach.
The Patriots built an early cushion with a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and carried a 7-1 advantage into halftime. After a scoreless third quarter in which the Blue Devils settled defensively and generated several looks on cage, Cumberlands closed the contest with six goals in the fourth to seal the result.
Lawrence Tech's goals came from Audrey Durham and Alyson Walendzak, both finishing unassisted. Durham put the Blue Devils on the board midway through the second quarter, breaking up a 6-0 Cumberlands run. Walendzak added Lawrence Tech's second tally early in the fourth quarter, trimming the deficit to 10-2 before the visitors responded with three late goals.
Despite the final scoreline, the Blue Devils generated 13 shots, 11 of them on goal, and matched Cumberlands in several hustle categories. Lawrence Tech collected 22 ground balls to the Patriots' 25 and forced 17 Cumberlands turnovers, staying active in the ride and on the defensive end. The Blue Devils also completed 13 of 18 clears as they worked to move the ball through the midfield against sustained pressure.
Cumberlands held the edge on the draw, 12-6, which helped the visitors control possession, particularly in the opening quarter and down the stretch. Lawrence Tech's defense produced a scoreless third quarter, holding the Patriots without a goal for 15 minutes and creating opportunities in transition, including a Durham shot that rang off the post in the third.
In goal, the Blue Devils finished with eight saves against 21 shots on cage, while Cumberlands goalkeeper Mikayla Kimsey totaled nine saves in a complete-game effort. The contest was played cleanly, with just two fouls assessed to each team and only one free-position attempt per side.
Lawrence Tech will look to build on the defensive stretches and possession gains from Saturday's matchup as the Blue Devils turn their attention to a road trip to Georgetown College on Feb. 28.
