SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's tennis team defeated Lake Superior State (Mich.) University 7-2 on Friday afternoon at Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, Mich.
Lawrence Tech (15-1) took the doubles flights, 2-1 with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Sergio Lopez (SR/Madrid, Spain) and Javier Alvarez (SO/Santiago de Compostela, Spain) won 8-3 at No. 1 singles, while Vincent Colarossi (SO/Dearborn Heights, MI) and Robert Saitov (FR/Ufa, Bashkortostan Republic Ru) won 8-3 at No. 3. Jan Horstkoetter (FR/Cologne, Germany) and Mason Wenzel (SO/Howell, MI) fell at No. 2 singles, 8-3.
The lone singles loss for the Blue Devils came at No. 1 singles with Lopez dropping the opening set 6-4 and taking the second set 6-4 to force a 10-point tie-breaker. Lopez fell in the tie-breaker, 10-5 for just his second loss this spring.
Alvarez won his match 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles defeating Borja Font followed by Horstkoetter winning at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-3. Saitov moves up to No. 4 singles and gets the same results, a 6-2, 6-0 win to remain undefeated this season. Wenzel moves to 7-2 on the spring following his 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, his second match this spring at No. 5. Colarossi uses strong serve to power past TJ Myers 6-4, 6-1.
Lawrence Tech is back on the courts Wednesday, March 30 when they travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., to open WHAC play at Indiana Tech. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
