Blue Devils Earn Program's First WHAC Win, Defeat (RV) Cornerstone 7-2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's tennis team made history today as they earned the programs first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) win with a 7-2 victory over (RV) Cornerstone (Mich.) University.

Lawrence Tech (17-2, 1-1 WHAC) opened the match with an 8-4 loss at No. 3 doubles as Robert Saitov (FR/Ufa, Bashkortostan Republic Ru) and Vincent Colarossi (SO/Dearborn Heights, MI)). At No. 2 doubles, Jan Horstkoetter (FR/Cologne, Germany) and Mason Wenzel (SO/Howell, MI) were up 5-2 in their match and squeaked out a 9-7 win to give tie it at 1-1.

Sergio Lopez (SR/Madrid, Spain) and Javier Alvarez won at No. 1 doubles 8-6 as the Blue Devils headed to the singles flights up 2-1.

Alvarez scored the next point for LTU as he defeated Austin Hunt at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-2, followed by Horstkoetter winning 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 to give Lawrence Tech a 4-1 lead with four matches to go. Saitov sealed the win for LTU with a tough 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles to earn the program's first conference win.

Lopez lost at No. 1 singles 6-7 (5), 6-7 (5) to Elijah Yi, but Wenzel won at No. 5 singles 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 and Colarossi won at No. 6 singles 6-1, 7-5.

Lawrence Tech is back on the court April 14 at 4 p.m. when they host (RV) Davenport (Mich.) University at Southfield Tennis Courts.
