TUCSON, Ari. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team opened the 2017 Tucson Invitational Spring Games with a split, falling to Goshen (Ind.) College in game one, followed by a victory against Bethel (Ind.) College in game two.
Lawrence Tech is now 4-6 on the season while Goshen improves to 3-3 and Bethel falls to 0-4.
LTU 1, GOSHEN 4
The Blue Devils struck early, scoring their first run on a Brooke Dillon solo homerun in the first inning. LTU went on to remain on top until the bottom of the fourth when the Leafs caught fire, bringing around four unanswered runs.
Rodriguez started the excitement with a free base leading to singles from Thompson and White to fill the bases. Crasper nailed a hard double to bring home Rodriguez and Thompson. In the next at bat, Sutter added two insurance runs with another double, advancing White and Crasper to give Goshen a 4-1 advantage that would hold steady the rest of the game.
Dillon finished game one with one run and three hits in four at bats. Alexa Cherney was on the mound for Lawrence Tech, recording two strikeouts and two walked batters.
LTU 8, BETHEL 8
In game two, the Pilots jumped ahead first, putting a run on the board in the fifth on a McElfresh double to left field that brought around Mathison.
After that it was all Blue Devils. In the sixth, Meredith Adams blasted a double to center field allowing Dillon to cross home plate with ease. Moments later Dana Bigham singled to bring around Adams, giving LTU a 2-1 lead. In the seventh, five more Blue Devils touched the dish, including Alina Molette, Madison Solecki, Bailey Brown, Hanna Rudock and Katie Kubiak, sealing the game 8-1.
Adams led the way for LTU with two runs, one hit and one RBI. On the mound, Sydney Schultz recorded her first collegiate win, allowing only four hits and one run while striking out two batters.
UP NEXT
LTU has a busy Sunday in Tucson, starting with an 11:00 am game against Judson College, followed by a 5:30 pm contest with (23) Park University and wrapping up the day with William Penn University at 8:00 pm.
