LTU Sweeps Cornerstone 7-0, 10-9

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team brought home two wins this evening as they won 7-0 and 10-9 against Cornerstone (Mich.) University in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

GAME ONE - LTU 7, CU 0

Lawrence Tech (16-25, 4-11 WHAC) wasted no time in taking a 2-0 lead as lead-off hitter Alina Molette rocketed a homerun ball clean over the fence to immediately put LTU on the board. Stepping up next to bat was Meredith Adams who also nailed a homerun, pushing the Blue Devils up 2-nil.

LTU's lead continued to rise in the third inning as Brooke Dillon notched an RBI on her line drive to left field, scoring Adams who had reached on a single to left center. The Blue Devils added two more runs in the fifth inning as Cherilyn Banas reached home after taking advantage of a Cornerstone error and Maddy Gapshes touched home on a Katie Kubiak RBI to center field.

Another pair of runs from Molette and Adams on a second Adams homerun in the sixth inning would increase Lawrence Tech's lead to 7-0.

In the circle, Alexa Cherney, with a strong defense, handled Cornerstone's batters, allowing only three hits and no runs in game one. Cherney finished with eight strikeouts and one walk.

GAME TWO - LTU 10, CU 9

After one inning, the Golden Eagles had already a built a 7-0 lead, forcing LTU to dig deep. Which is exactly what they did; outscoring Cornerstone 10-2 in the following five innings.

In the third, Molette earned a run off an Adams single, followed by a run by Adams on a balk by the pitcher. The Blue Devils kept it rolling with another run in the fourth as Banas singled to shortstop for an RBI, bringing in a Genna Skalski who reached on an error.

An inning later the Blue Devils added two more runs, making the score 8-5. A single up the middle from Dillon in the sixth inning made the score 8-7 as Mattingly and Banas scored, but the final inning is what gave LTU their victory.

Molette singled on a CU error, bringing around Bailey Brown who earned a base on a hit to shortstop. Adams stepped up to the plate next, pushing a single to right field, bring around Banas and Ruddock, giving the Blue Devils a 10-9 lead, carrying out through the final inning.

Sydney Schultz brought home the win for the Blue Devils, recording four strikeouts and two runs on five hits.

The Blue Devils return to action on Monday, April 24 as they go head-to-head with Indiana Tech in a doubleheader, hosted by Madonna (Mich.) University. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
