#24 LTU Makes History, Earns First Trip to WHAC Tournament Finals with 5-4 win over #17 Aquinas

LIMA, Ohio - The No. 24-ranked Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's tennis team earned its first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament Finals appearance in program history as they defeated Indiana Tech 5-2 in the quarterfinals and No. 17-ranked Aquinas (Mich.) College 5-4 in the semifinals. The Blue Devils will face No. 4-ranked University of Northwestern Ohio on Saturday, April 29 at 9 a.m. in Lima, Ohio.

Lawrence Tech (20-5, 4-2) opened the match trailing Aquinas 2-1 after the doubles flight as Juan Bermudez (SO/Cartagena, Columbia) and Javier Alvarez (JR/Santiago de Compostela, Spain) defeated Gunnar Perry and Jordan Lomas 8-3. The win moves the tandems season record to 14-3.

The Blue Devils responded by taking four of the six singles matches to secure their first trip to the tournament finals with a 5-4 win. Bermudez defeated Perry at No. 1 singles 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 while Alvarez got past Lomas at No. 2 singles 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to give LTU the wins at the top two singles slot.

At No. 3 singles, Robert Saitov (SO/Ufa, Bashkortostan Republic Ru) battled Chase Perry to a three set loss as he fell 2-6, 7-5, 4-6. Jan Horstkoetter (JR/Cologne, Germany) gave Lawrence Tech another win at No. 4 singles as he beat Will Burma 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Stijn Bremer (FR/Arnhem, Gelderland, Netherland) added another win to his 14-2 record coming into the tournament, this one at No. 5 singles defeating Kenny Garstecki 6-1, 6-4. Mason Wenzel (JR/Howell, MI) fought at No. 6 singles as he faced Ryan Fedena in a three set match, falling 0-6, 6-3, 2-6.

Lawrence Tech faced Indiana Tech in the quarterfinals of the tournament and won 5-2. No results were reported as of this release.
