ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team finishes their inaugural season with a sweep over Rochester (Mich.) College this afternoon, taking game one 16-0, followed by a 12-7 victory in game two. These two wins mark head coach Anna Ball's 100th career win.
GAME ONE | LTU 16, ROCHESTER 0
Lawrence Tech (22-26) wasted no time in building a lead on the Warriors, going up 4-nil after one inning of play. Alina Molette notched the Blue Devils' first run after taking a base on balls. Meredith Adams brought her around on a double to center field before rounding the bases herself on a Dana Bigham single up the middle. Designated player Brooke Dillon added the fourth run after reaching home on an RBI from Jackie Mattingly.
The first of three errors from Rochester allowed a fifth Blue Devil run to cross home plate in the second inning before Molette slapped a homerun ball in the third, increasing LTU's lead to 6-0.
A dominant fifth inning followed, resulting in 10 runs from Lawrence Tech. Mattingly led off in the fifth, earning a seventh run while Bailey Brown, Molette, Cherilyn Banas, Brooke Dillon, Mary Armstrong, Hannah Ruddock and Katie Kubiak all contributed to the thumping.
As a team, LTU finished with 13 hits and no errors compared to Rochester's two hits and three errors. Alexa Cherney was in the circle for LTU, recording eight strikeouts in 17 at bats.
GAME TWO | LTU 12, ROCHESTER 7
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two on Molette and Bigham runs. Adams tacked on a third run in the second inning on an Armstrong RBI single to left field but the Warriors would not go down as easy, recording three of their own runs to even the score 3-3.
LTU battled to take the lead 4-3, capitalizing on a Rochester error. Another big fifth inning launched the Blue Devils into a 10-3 advantage with runs from Molette, Adams, Bigham, Banas, Mattingly and a three-run homerun from Brooke Dillon.
The Warriors were able to string together a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap 10-6, but two more insurance runs from Adams and Bigham sealed a LTU 12-7 victory.
Lawrence Tech returns to action on May 3 as they compete in the WHAC Tournament hosted by Lourdes (Ohio) University.
