LAWRENCE TECH SOFTBALL OFFICIAL STATISTICS
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University opens the 2018 season with the Georgetown - Lindenwood-Belleville Tournament in Georgetown, Ky., starting Friday, March 2 against [RV] Georgetown (Ky.) College at 4 p.m. followed by Indiana University - Southeast at 6 p.m.
The Blue Devils play 13 games over spring break including games against No. 7 Georgia Gwinnett College, No. 8 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) College, No. 12 Campbellsville (Ky.) University, No. 14 Reinhardt (Ga.) University, [RV] Clarke (Iowa) University, Martin Methodist (Tenn.) University, Bethel (Tenn.) University, and Saint Ambrose (Iowa) University.
Lawrence Tech enters the season with new head coach Karen Baird taking over in the program's second year. Baird inherits a team that won 22 games in their inaugural season and earned a spot in the WHAC Tournament. The Blue Devils return All-WHAC First Team player Meredith Adams (SO/Portage, Mich. ) who led the team with 30 RBI's to go with three homeruns, 13 doubles, 16 walks, and 62 hits with a .411 batting average. 2017 All-WHAC Second Team honoree Alina Molette (SO/Wyoming, Mich.) returns for her sophomore campaign after leading the team in at-bats last season with 173. Molette hit .335 with three homeruns, 26 RBI's, and led the team in doubles with 15.
On the mound, Alexa Cherney (SO/Farmington Hills, Mich. ) returns after finishing 2017 with 14 wins, seven shutouts, and a 3.02 ERA. She appeared in 36 games and pitched a team high 171.2 innings. Cherney earned WHAC All-Defensive Team selection and All-WHAC Second Team honors as a freshman as she led the team in WHAC in strikeouts with 175. Sydney Schultz (SO/Commerce Twp, Mich.) pitched in 19 games for the Blue Devils with a 4.98 ERA. Brittney Bult (SO/Brampton, Ontario) pitched in 21 games and started 13 going 3-7 with four complete games. Bult led the team in batting average with a .429 on three hits in seven at-bats.
Other players returning include Dana Bigham (SO/Jackson, Mich.) who was third on the team in hitting with a .382 batting average. Bigham finished the 2017 season with 58 hits, nine doubles, one homerun and 29 RBI's. Genna Skalski (SO/Brighton, Mich.) returns for her sophomore season after starting 35 games as a freshman. Skalski hit .308 in 117 plate appearance with 38 hits, 19 runs, four doubles, and 12 RBI's. Cherilyn Banas (JR/Oxford, Mich.) returns after basketball season, she played in 37 games last season, hitting .256 with 20 hits, four stolen bases, .952 fielding percentage. Madison Solecki (JR/Romeo, Mich.) hit .268 in 2017 and finished the season with 11 hits and a stolen base. Tayah Wagner (SO/Waterford, Mich.), Bailey Brown (SO/Mt. Pleasant, Mich.), Katie Kubiak (SO/Burlington, Wisc.), and Jackie Mattingly (SO/Chino Hills, Calif.) all return as well.
The Blue Devils added six freshman this season with Katie Cyster (FR/Wyandotte, Mich.), Sydney Coe (FR/Napoleon, Mich.), Nicole Schwerin (FR/West Bloomfield, Mich.), Gina Barber (FR/Canton, Mich.), Andra Malburg (FR/Maineville, Ohio), and Brittany Wieland.
COACH BAIRD QUOTES
What are the team's expectations coming into the program's second season? The team had a successful first year. We are building off that success with our returners and newcomers this year. The team has been working very hard this off season and we want to be competing for a WHAC championship and post season play.
How did the off-season go this Fall? We felt our team really grew in the fall. We are building a winning culture here not only in the classroom but on the field. The players worked hard in the weight room and in the off season. We read an incredible book to help us be great teammates. "Hard Hat" by Jon Gordon has been our focus all year.
What kind of offense can fans expect to see with Coach Baird at the helm? Our offense will consist of a power and speed mix. We love the pop in our bats but we also want to help create scoring opportunities for the big bats. We will put players in motion and try to put pressure on the defense.
What will the Blue Devils look like in the field and what do you expect of them? We return experience from last year which is very important for the growth of our team. On the field, you may see some players in different positions from the previous year. We have some very talented players and we continue to work on making our defense very strong.
How will your non-conference schedule prepare you for the upcoming WHAC season? We are playing a lot of ranked teams in the preseason which will be great in our preparation for our ultimate goal of a WHAC championship and post season play. We are ready for the challenge and looking forward to seeing the team on the field.
