Lawrence Tech splits at Siena Heights, falling 4-2 in game one and taking game two 11-5

ADRIAN, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team earned a split at Siena Heights (Mich.) University on Friday, April 13 in Adrian, Mich. They opened with a 4-2 loss followed by an 11-5 win.

Lawrence Tech (12-10, 5-5) opened game two with 11 runs over three innings starting in the second with three runs to take a 3-0 lead. Cherilyn Banas (JR/Oxford, Mich.) and Andra Malburg (FR/Maineville, Ohio) scored off a Saints error to get things started for Lawrence Tech while Katie Cyster (FR/Wyandotte, Mich.) scored off a Brittany Wieland (FR/Alexandria, Va.) RBI single.

The Blue Devils added four runs in the top of the third inning as Meredith Adams (SO/Portage, Mich. ) ledoff with a single to leftfield. Nicole Schwerin (FR/West Bloomfield, Mich.) pinch ran for Adams and moved to second on Brittney Bult (SO/Brampton, Ontario)'s sacrifice bunt. Schwerin scored on Alex Amos (SO/Corona, Calif.)' RBI single to make it 4-0. Amos scored on Bailey Brown (SO/Mt. Pleasant, Mich.)'s RBI single to give Lawrence Tech a 5-0 lead. Banas' ground out to the pitcher to score Brown and make it 6-0. Cyster's RBI single scored Malburg to make it 7-0.

Siena Heights (13-9, 5-3) added four runs in the bottom of the third as they finally got to Bult with a leadoff single. An RBI double gave the Saints a run and trimmed the elad to 7-1. A Blue Devil error led to the Saints second run while an RBI double made it 7-3. Siena Heights added an unearned run when the Blue Devils error scored Forest to cut it to 7-4.

Lawrence Tech responded in the top of the fourth with another four run inning as Adams ledoff with a double and scored off a bases clearing double from Dana Bigham (SO/Jackson, Mich.). Bigham's double scored Malburg, Amos, and Adams to extend the lead to 10-4. Cyster's RBI single to right-center scored Banas to make it 11-4. The Saints added a run in the bottom of the fourth off an RBI double, but Bult got out of the inning with no more damage. She finished the complete game win allowing five runs - three earned - on nine hits with three strikeouts.

In game one, Lawrence Tech fell behind 2-0, but Wieland's two-run shot tied the game in the third inning. Alexa Cherney (SO/Farmington Hills, Mich. ) got the start on the mound, giving up four runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Cherney breezed through the first inning, but a leadoff double started things off for the Saints in the second inning. Cherney set the next six batters down before a double in the fifth inning gave the Saints a 3-2 lead. Raquel Ward added another run on an RBI single to right field to take the 4-2 lead. The Blue Devils had runners on first and second with two outs, but Ward was able to get the strikeout for the 4-2 win.

Lawrence Tech is back on the field April 18 when they host Rochester (Mich.) College at the Madonna Athletic Complex in Livonia, Mich. Opening pitch for game one is set for 3;30 p.m.
