DETROIT, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team split a pair of conference games against University of Northwestern Ohio, a 4-1 win in game one and a 4-1 loss in game two at University of Detroit's Buysse Field in Detroit, Mich.
Lawrence Tech (18-14, 11-9) opened the scoring in the third inning as Brittney Bult (SO/Brampton, Ontario) scored Meredith Adams (SO/Portage, Mich. ) with an RBI Single to shortstop to give LTU a 1-0 lead. The Racers tied the game in the top of the fifth with an RBI single to left field.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Blue Devils scored three more runs to take a 4-1 lead as Alex Amos (SO/Corona, Calif.) reached on an error, scoring both Dana Bigham (SO/Jackson, Mich.) and Nicole Shwerin. Amos made it a three-run lead as Katie Kubiak (SO/Burlington, Wisc.) singled to center field.
Alexa Cherney (SO/Farmington Hills, Mich. ) started in the circle, getting the complete game win, her eighth of the season. Cherney allowed one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Bigham went 2-for-4 with one run and a double. Bailey Brown (SO/Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) went 1-for-2 with a double and a sacrifice. Kubiak finished 1-for-1 with an RBI.
In game two, the Blue Devils fell behind 3-0 after the second inning as started Sydney Coe (FR/Napoleon, Mich.) gave up a leadoff double in the first inning, leading to a 1-0 lead for the Racers. Northwestern Ohio added two more runs in the third off a pair of doubles as Coe was relieved by Sydney Schultz (SO/Commerce Twp, Mich.). Schultz got the next two batters to get out of the inning trailing by three runs.
Bigham gave Lawrence Tech their first run of the game in the fourth off a homerun to make it 3-1. Northwestern Ohio added a run in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead off a sacrifice fly to right field. The Blue Devils had runners on first and second with no outs, but a foul out followed by a ground up gave LTU runners in scoring position with one out. The Racers got a foul pop-out to first base side of the diamond to get out of the jam.
The Blue Devils end the regular season on Wednesday, April 25 at the Legacy Center in Brighton, Mich. First game set for 2:30 p.m.
