BRIGHTON, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team dropped a pair of games, 6-4 and 5-2 (8 inn.), to Cleary (Mich.) University on Wednesday afternoon at the Legacy Center in Brighton, Mich.
Lawrence Tech (18-16) took a 4-2 lead into the top of the seventh inning, but a four-run seventh by Cleary gave the Cougars the 6-4 win. Alexa Cherney (SO/Farmington Hills, Mich. ) started the game in the circle and went 5.1 innings allowing two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
Sydney Schultz (SO/Commerce Twp, Mich.) relieved Cherney in the sixth inning, but two runs in the seventh put Cherney back in the game with two outs and a 4-4 tie. The first batter Cherney saw in the inning hit a two RBI single to give Cleary the 6-4 lead. Cherney got the final out of the inning on a strikeout, her seventh of the game. Brittany Wieland (FR/Alexandria, Va.) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored, and a stolen base. Genna Skalski (SO/Brighton, Mich.) hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI.
In game two, both teams scored in the first inning and that held until the extra innings when Cleary plated four runs to take a 5-1 lead in the eighth. Lawrence Tech scored a run in the bottom of the eighth, but that was it as the Cougars held on for the win. Brittney Bult (SO/Brampton, Ontario) started the game in the circle, going 7.1 innings giving up five runs - four earned - on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks. A three-run homerun by Cleary in the eighth, gave the Cougars a four run lead.Wieland finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Meredith Adams (SO/Portage, Mich. ) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
The Blue Devils are now finished with the regular season and await their fate in the WHAC Tournament. They currently sit in sixth place at 11-9 in conference play. The top eight teams in the conference make the postseason tournament, located at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Ohio, May 2-4.
