Blue Devils Sweep Tripleheader Opponents at PFX the Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla.- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team defeated Doane (Neb.) University, 4-3, Missouri Baptist University, 3-2, and College of St. Mary (Neb.), 3-1, in PFX the Spring Games action.

Sydney Coe toed the rubber for Lawrence Tech (15-1, 0-0) during the first four innings of the game, Alexa Cherney pitched in relief of Coe in the last three innings. Coe surrendered one run off two hits and two runs. Cherney allowed no runs and one hit off the 10 batters she faced, struck out two.

The Blue Devils collected seven hits, led by Sarah Hige and Katie Cyster with three off four at-bats. Hige paced the squad with two runs and Brittany Wieland pitched in with one, while Andra Malburg recorded the lone Blue Devil RBI.

The Blue Devils took the lead in the third inning when Hige scored after tagging up off a fly out by Malburg. College of St. Mary (3-6, 0-0) tied the game in the following inning. Lawrence Tech continued fighting and found the edge once again in the sixth inning after Wieland scored on a steal of home despite Cherilyn Banas lining out to pitcher Kelsey Goodban. Hige secured the victory for the Blue Devils in the top of the seventh inning off a Flame error.

Lawrence Tech battled to defeat Missouri Baptist (4-7, 0-0) as the team broke the 2-2 tie and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sydney Schultz started on the circle and pitched for six innings. Schultz allowed two runs off six hits and zero walks and sat down two of the 20 batters she faced. Cherney pitched in the last inning, in which she struck out two off three batters.

Hige, Alex Amos, and Banas scored a run each for the Blue Devils. In addition, Amos and Banas went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Adams led LTU with game-high 11 putouts.

Lawrence Tech and Missouri Baptist were scoreless until a third-inning fielder's choice that led the Spartans to score the first run of the contest. The Blue Devils built a comeback and took the 2-1 lead in the fourth inning with runs by Hige and Amos. Missouri Baptist tied the game in the sixth inning off a fielder's choice. Adams was in charge of driving in Banas to score the run that gave the Blue Devils the win.

Freshman pitcher Faith Barden toed the rubber during the whole outing. She surrendered three runs off eight hits and no walks. Barden struck out one of the 27 batters she faced and left six runners on base.

Cyster led the charge with two runs, while Gina Barber and Banas contributed with one each. Adams drove in two runners, while Malburg and Wieland followed suit with one. The Blue Devil outhit the Tigers, 9-8. Barber, Adams and Malburg collected two hits each.

The game against Doane (8-10, 0-0) was a back-and-forth affair as the Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, just for the Tigers to take it away in the fourth with three runs, and for Lawrence Tech to reclaim it in the bottom of the fifth and set the score 5-2. Barden shut down Missouri Baptist in the sixth and seventh innings to hold on to the 4-3 win.

The Blue Devils will be back in action on Friday, March 15 to close out Florida trip against  St. Mary-of-the-Woods College (Ind.) at 9 a.m. and Indiana University-South Bend at 11:15 a.m.
